Ok, so we are definitely going to get a dog. I want an English Bull, the wife doesn't so that's that. Ditto for staffs. The wife wants a chihuahua or a king Charles spaniel, I said not a chance. I really want a Lakeland terrier but I can't seem to find any long haired ones (like Surfer's) and tte shorter haired ones don't appeal.
Needs to be small, lots of energy do can take it riding and be good with kids and our cats.
Want to spend less than £300 on a pup. I'd like a JRT but the wife has reservations as some are truly nuts in a bad way.
Cocker spaniels a little too big and also there's the rage issue.
What else is there??
Don't want a border terrier btw...
Staffy?
Springador, will come small. May stay that way.
Great dogs. We wanted a small dog but ended up with ours. We've a tiny house. Think small Lab. Ah go on.
Border Terriers make a good trail dog as bred to run with horses, your cat may not be so happy though.
bedlington.
daft as a brush, will happily (and speedily) run around like a loon for hours or spend the day snoozing infront of the fire. Is completely fantastic with our two girls (4 and 6) and about the size of a small collie.
Oh, and pretty much non-shedding and hypo-allergenic so not stinky and no hairs over everything.
We've a two bed end of terrace and the four of us + Stanley the bedlington happily co-exist. He cost us the princely sum of £150 last year.
Go find a rescue mongrel that has bits of collie and terrier in it. Job done (checking for temperament is a given for this approach).
Cocker too big? Try for a good working type from a local gamekeeper or something... Works tend to be smaller, have less hair and are a bit more energetic. Ours certainly is and he loves running out with the bikes.
Not a King Charles though, they are a lapdog and very yappy.
How about working through the other terrier types until you find something that you both like? Some of the breeds are lovely.
Don't get anything spaniel.
I would (and did) go to the dogs home and have a look around.
Don't get anything spaniel.
If you want a lakeland terrier seek out a good breeder and get one even if it takes a while.
Border Terriers are great dogs, full of character. Not sure why you don't want one of these as they seem ideal. IMP Staffie would be a very bad choice and Spaniels will not be able to run with the bike IMO.
Failing that if you can wait till November and can get to london you could try Discover Dogs

Not trying to be rude or pry - but why?
The initial cost of a dog is tiny compared to their "running" costs - if you haven't already I'd suggest having a proper look at all the things you'll end up forking out for over their lifetime...

this.
the first thing they eat when you let them out of your sight will probably be worth more than £300.
Spaniels are awesome - FACT.
That's really true. Both mine have different characters, but both are superb dogs and I love them to bits. I probably would have loved them anyway if they had been other breeds, but compared to my mother's dogs they re way better. Compared to my sister-in-law's border terrier, both are better.
You get the drift...

Pretty pleased with our Lurcher rescue.
Loved the Cockapoos I've seen/met recently, fabulous looking dogs bundles of character, spendy though
JR.....or min pin.
Westie.
Awesome bits of kit.. 🙂
Spaniels will not be able to run with the bike IMO
Really? See loads of spaniels out with their biking owners over the Chase - although one or two have nearly had me off the bike, most seem pretty well trained.
You should totally get a Tibetan Terrier crossed with some sort of spaniel, they’re the best*. They can jump vertically from stationary over four foot, and have hair rather than fur. This is important as a) they don’t shed like a normal dog, and b) you can give them different hairstyles.
The 70s rocker:
The slinky model:
And the OMG WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO ME?
Lovely temperament, never shown any sign of aggression towards anyone or anything, loves other dogs, quiet yet playful. Crap at walking to heel though due to guarding tendancies, and obsessed with squirrels and birds. We’re hoping to get that sorted so he can join me on the slower bike rides on the fire roads. Don’t think he’s much of a singletrack dog....

** Yeah, I totally used this thread as an excuse to post pictures of our dog again. Sorry
*** Also, go to a rescue home, lots of lovely pooches needing a home - the Dogs Trust will let you know which dogs are good with kids, other dogs, etc. It's best to go on a Saturday, as a lot of the more family-orientated dogs get snapped up then.
Dalmation or wimaraner
great with kids, will run with a bike all day!

^This +1
Whippet/Bedlington Lurcher
Echo the sentiments that you could find a lovely cross breed in rescue that ticked lots of your boxes.
http://www.dogsblog.com/tag/suitable-to-live-with-cats/ has just a few examples of the many shapes and sizes of what lovely dogs are out there.
Bin the wife, get a staffy. Sorted.
Jack Russell.
Short haired, clean and non stinky....also bags and bags of personality, mine has a mental 5 mins at least once a day....great company and about as low maintenance as dogs get, no real diseases with this breed to look out for either.
Labradoodle!
+1 great personalities, very smart. They can come in small, medium or large, depending on parentage.. One of mine is 68 pounds and the other is 40 pounds (and her brother from her litter is 32 pounds).
they all seem a bit ADHD.....even compared to my JRTLabradoodle!

I haven't seen that in ours or in a couple others I know of in the area, but doesn't mean some aren't like that. The lab side does make them think they are the patron saint of tennis balls
Hungarian Viszla
big enough to deter, run all day and thinks its a lap dog
check out amber on You tube
Great with kids an all
Try dogsblog.com.
Lots of dogs wanting new homes.
P.S Get a crossbreed. Pedigree makes things possible more difficult and more expensive, especially with "action packed" dogs.
We have a GWP £71per month insurance and ear problems and a Vizsla/GWP cross who is bullet proof health and temperament wise.
What ever dog you get you wont be biking with it for at least 14 months

Very true--really hard on puppies/young dogs to run them too much until they are fully developed. There is a guy in my area who runs every morning at full clip, practically dragging a young puppy along behind him.
Dalmatian - can have aggression issues and the need for loads of walking every day. If you go down this route get a bitch, smaller than the dogs and better temperament. They do guard though and hunt, if you get one of these types they don't run trails very well. Carriage dog genes are noticeable by the running to front wheel tendency without the need for training.
+1 for Viszla. Except you won't get one for £300.
So +1 for Dogs Trust. Rehome a good dog, and they'll make sure you get something suitable.
Don't get one - why risk being a bad neighbour having a nuisance dog?
A jack Russell would fit your description, could run on trail and are small
