The outside of the mansion needs painting along with the gutters.

At the moment its white or off white due to grime/not being painted for a long time.

We are not sure wether to go grey or white ?

1st quote from guy we've used before

£500 he supplies paint for pebbledash (only white) tile paint for under the bay window and all paint for gutters.

or £450 we supply paint( grey ) (he would still supply black paint for gutter)and tile paint

or as above but he supplies tile paint for an extra £25

does this sound feasible ? 2 days he reckons on his own, so looking at paint prices it looks like he's charging £200 a day labour ! just sounds crazy or am I being tight/out of date with prices....
windows dont need painting as they are double glazed)
So what fares better white or grey ??

A few questions there hope the knowledge can help !

All I can say is that painting pebbledash to ensure full coverage is tedious, mind numbing and vey slow. You must have a small house, or he has never painted pebbledash before 😉

I take it he thinks it will take him less than a week?

Or he could be spraying it?

STW the place where making a profit on a job is not allowed!

Taxes, insurance, fuel, vehicle costs, tools, maintance of equipment etc etc all have to come out of a day rate. oh and he might just want feed and put some shoes on himself and his family.

You say you used him before, where you happy with his work?

How much do you earn a day? If it's cheaper for you to take time off working and your biking
/family time DIY.

Before you worry about colour make sure the paint being used is optimized - non breathable standard exterior emulsions can cause dampening - not always but it's a consideration ...

Assuming it's a solid wall property, have you considered solid wall insulation...
Had ours done last year, made a massive difference over the winter, & the bit of damp we had disappeared overnight.
Was pricey at the time, as a lot were getting ECO funding, but now folk are paying real prices, I'd heard they had come down.
Really has massively improved comfort levels, & although the Winter was a mild one, I'd say realistically a 25-30% reduction in gas bills.
Just a thought.

having painted a 3 bed end of terrace I would say that is a bargain! as mentioend above it is tedious and very slow… I would bite his hand off, and get the quote in writing, not just an estimate!

Why just white or grey when there's so many more options?

My motto is, if you want it done right do it yourself.
Two days sounds like a slap dash job.

it looks like he's charging £200 a day labour ! j

He's not charging you for labour, he's charging for the task. If he can knock it out in one 16 hour day, good for him. If it takes him four days, that's his problem. You should worry about the total price and the quality...
