News today of 100 new stores ten thousand new jobs.

I guess they'll have to teach Northern folk about eating stuff other than pies and mushy peas, but will they even understand?

I think it's doomed to fail.

I grew up in Yorkshire and moved to the Midlands in the late Nineties. I still don't feel ready to shop in these strange Southern emporiums.

There are loads up north as it is, plus haven't you poor southerns tried online Waitrose/Ocado, us backward northerners have been using them for years..

And then we have Booths, which as above makes Waitrose feel particularly down market.

We've had one in Hexham for years. Always plenty of houmus needed there. It used to be Morrisons which was considerably worserer than the Safeway which preceded it. Also Durham and Newcastle in John Lewis' basement I believe.

If by North you mean Scotland - well that's a different matter.

There was a Waitrose in Durham but for some strange reason they located in the city centre with nightmare parking and it closed as quickly as it opened.

I've sold food products to Waitrose and Booths in the past and they are the 2 classiest supermarket chains in the country but Booths are ahead by a nose.

I love the tradition of Booths and the fact you still met members of the family when dealing with them - I used to deal with Mr Simon (Booth) - all the family members are known as Mr and were charming people to do business with.

Booths have one of the best wine selections of any retail outlet of any kind in the UK. When I lived nr Knutsford, Booths was a delight to shop in.

And as one friend from Poole used to say, your all Northerners, and another from Carlisle took great great pleasure in calling Mancunians poncy shandy drinking Southeners.

And anyway, Scotland, might as well be talking about Iceland, different country and all that.

I know there is one in Durham and Hexham and I'm fairly certain I've seen one in Newcastle somewhere.

Manchester is fairly south but you stop being Northern when you hit the border and become Scottish. Are they going that far north.

There's been one in Otley for years - prior to that there was only a Netto. One extreme to another. And recently Sainsbury's have opened up.

Apparently the Leeds and Manchester distribution centres of Ocado are its two biggest in terms of annual sales growth last year.

The problem with all these posh supermarkets moving North and Asda and Morrisons moving South is that Northerners will become health conscious humous and guacamole eating, red wine drinking foodies, and Southerners will become pork pie and sauasage eating, bitter drinking fatties. This must be the solution to the North - South divide that has perplexed Government's over the years.

As I recall it, Safeways was the main Supermarket in Otley for many years (now a Waitrose), certainly 90s, possibly 80s.
Morrisons bought the whole Safeways estate in 2004 and off loaded alot of stores in the north to the likes of Waitrose. Waitrose in Otley and Harrogate were definitely previously Safeways stores, I think this (2004) was Waitrose first big expansion into the north of England (not sure about further north or the odd store in places like Manchester).

They sell the same items but charge more, you get a little plastic disc to pretend you're doing you bit for charity by shopping there.

MrsBouy was born in Harrogate, family still live there. When Waitrose moved in a sigh of relief could be heard all across to Brimham Rocks.

However, they're not happy about Tesco's moving in.

Ellesmere, Shropshire has got a relatively new Tesco supermarket which has brought much needed employment to the area, which is good, let's say 100 jobs. Unfortunately it's on the site of the old dairy that employed 300+ people and is in direct competition with the local shops which I'm sure now have a very bleak future.
Somtimes I have internal conflicts as to whether this is good or bad and whether we should support our local shops if they can't compete.
People who know the area will also know Stan's Shop, a local shop that has killed off other local shops.

While we have a Waitrose in Formby, and a huge (but excellent) Tesco near Chorley, and Booths in Leyland, the best thing about living in West Lancashire is...

...the fact that loads of the produce comes from round here. Every farm has a shop selling its produce direct to us....

Didn't the Durham one close after a year or so of being open? Or has it re-opened?

The ale selection in Waitrose is quite good, but Booth's is the master.

I like Booth's.

proof that people from regions other than the SE/SW/E have to overcompensate for their insecurities by overt regionalistic jingoism.

And there's me thinking it's only us Southerners who are meant to be snobby and elitist.... 🙄

TBH, I've experienced more snobbery on trips Oop North than I've generally seen down South. And some of the most snobbish people I've ever met have bin Northerners. Funny that, in't it?

why do they resort to this defense mechanism? is it because they have something to hide?

Good question. That Yorkshire/Lancashite thing is something I always find amusing. Most folk mean it in jest, like the South/Rest Of London thing, but some are proper serious about it. A mate had his car window smashed, because it had a red rose sticker on it. Irony is, he's a Yorkshireman and just wasn't bothered about taking the sticker off the second hand car he'd bought to get about in.

Northerners do tend to come across as quite defensive sometimes, and seem very quick to extol the virtues of their beloved counties, to anyone who will listen, and you do get a bit of that 'Ee, it's God's own County this' type of chest puffing going on. What's that all about? No-one's actually saying where you come from is crap, you know.

Went to the one in Keswick, and was amazed! It was like a proper shop but in the North. Would love to have one near me, but according to their store finder the nearest is 136 miles away 🙁

I was at the supermarkets conference in June and watched Mark Price (MD of Waitrose) complain about the "posh" reputation Waitrose has.

"Waitrose is not POSH," he says "Waitrose is QUALITY. Sure, we have a store in Canary Wharf in which our most expensive bottle of wine is £300, but in that same store we also sell a £3.99 bottle of wine. Waitrose isn't posh."

The next person to speak was Andy Clarke, Chief Exec of Asda.

"I sympathise with Mark's worries about Waitrose being perceived as posh. We have a store near Canary Wharf, in the Isle of Dogs. Our most expensive wine in there is £15 a bottle. We're not posh either."

Made me chuckle.

Property prices will rise by 10-15% on the back of it, like the old days when Pizza Expresses used to open people knew the area was up and coming.

Noted! Luckily I'm just starting to think about moving, and will have before my landlord clicks. Unluckily, there won't be a brand new Booths nearby at the new place.

Thing that always gets me and given we were always told to be distrustful of anyone claiming honesty, why is it only good 'honest' stuff comes from Yorkshire? Including the last ridiculous ad I saw about broadband ffs.

You can't define northerness by geography alone. Harrogate is definitely more southern than Stoke, for example.

Anyway, Waitrose. What's the most ridiculous item they consider to be "Essential"? I'll start with taramasalata.

As above - Waitrose and Booths work together to get better terms from suppliers but Booths is still owned by the same family that started it.

The current chairman Edwin Booth is something like the great, great, great grandson of the founder, also Edwin Booth. Refreshing in this day and age.
