would it work simply as a wireless router if plugged into another router via a network cable?

yep shouldn't be a problem

i'd turn DHCP off on one or other of the routers tho so they aren't both trying to allocate IPs

yes. Works a treat with my AirPort Extreme plugged into it.

I get the macs, PCs and other devices to connect to the 'internal' network created by the AirPort Extremes. I leave the VirginMedia wireless network untouched.

ok, I have a long network cable from the router, but the network sockets on the superhub all seem to be 'out' ones. I accept that I'm IT-retarded. what do I do?
