Hi folks.. as above. Looking at a used laptop- haven't got a lot of spare cash at the moment and the one we have is dying!
I have seen the 2 above on fleebay- the vostro has a 3rd gen i5 1.7ghz processor in it and the lenovo has a 2ng gen i5 2.3ghz.. Other specs are similar. I do the odd bit of gopro editing but nothing to intensive and don't game. Which one would be the better option or are they much of a muchness?? Below are the 2 item numbers for the laptops involved..

I have one of the dells from work but have put an SSD in it. The touchpad has stopped working and the screen res/quality is quite poor (compared to my macbook pro) but other than that it's been a good bit of kit.

The Lenovo will be more robust but will need a RAM upgrade really. If you get it for that money then RAM upgrade and an SSD will extend its life massively.

I have a Lenovo x220i and it's fab. Keyboard and mousepad are superb (apart from quirky position of Ctrl key) - much better than on my new Dell E7250. 12" is a great size for portability, even if it is a bit chunky. Screen is very low res compared to modern laptops.

Yeh I was thinking of getting an ssd put in it. My worry was that the i5 in the vostro wouldn't cope with gopro editing..?

Without checking the specs at all, I'd go for the Lenovo every time - better built and very good keyboard. I have an old X200 here which I use as a server! and is very solid (though typing on a X121e - only an i3, but a bit more modern and slightly more consumer rather than business spec).

An i5 will certainly cope with gopro editing - just might be a bit slower (Not something I really do or know much about - I thought lots of RAM helped with that?)

The i5 in the Vostro actually has a higher CPU benchmark score.

i5 vostro:-

i5 lenovo:-

The Dell has USB 3.0 ports, not sure whether GoPro is USB3 or not...

Dell has Win10 vs Win7 on Lenovo.

Lenovo has a smaller screen.

They're otherwise much of a muchness really. Screen res is low on them both, so not much useable space once you take into account video editing software menus etc...

Something like this has a higher res. screen whilst still near your apparent budget.

Have bought two X220's for Teens. I'd swap my work HP for either in a heartbeat. The Dell's we used to use fell apart. The Lenovo could be used as a hammer to break up the spent Dells I've had!

Put an SSD drive in it to really speed start up performance.

Yup, Lenovo for work here, my next refresh is due and I'm getting an X240 (or maybe 250, think they are out now) - anyway, I'd go Lenovo everytime for a home PC too. That said, for editing an X series might be a bit small on the screen size .. you'd get more T for your money too.

Thanks a lot for all the input folks. I liked the look of the vostro but I always thought the lenovo would be more robust. I think I'll try and bag a lenovo and look for one with a SSD as well.. ๐Ÿ™‚

I came across these on the bay. I've personally never heard of them- but they have been used widely in schools so must be fairly robust! Decent specs for not a lot of money..
Item number
