I was told that if you book two tickets (using a non main station as the start/end) it can work out cheaper as they load the main station to station prices.

Question, are the first class carriages to Edinburgh 'worth it'?

I've seen some first class compartments with little more than different carpet and curtains added to drab interiors!

Its not for me- a treat for mrshora/hora junior.

Try crosscountrytrains.co.uk my brother used it yesterday and got a return to Edinburgh from Manchester Piccadilly for £76.00

Depends on which route and operator hora.

I've got an Edinburgh to Manchester Airport train before, run by TransPennine. That was exactly as you said - small compartment with nicer trimmings.

Get a Voyager (eg XC Trains) or Pendalino (Virgin West Coast) and you'll get a proper 1st class carriage.

Use the website for the operator you want to go on rather than the trainline, as trainline add booking fees.

Oh ffs. The TransPennine is the only one direct (no changes) either way.

So its a tenner to cancel and rebook with one change at Preston 🙁
