Ever think you're a bit weird for not liking normal things that everyone else does?

I know we're all different and have our own tastes but there are certain things that everyone seems to like. I don't mean weird or niche things, just every day stuff.

For me it's wine, steak and football.

Salmon and trout, annoying as we live yards from a river where I could catch them 🙄

Tomatoes

I like tomato soup, tomato sauce, tomato puree and even cherry tomatoes, but I can't stand normal tomatoes – they make me physically wretch.

I really don't like fresh salmon. But I do enjoy tinned salmon, the cheaper pink variety.

I hate cheese apart from when melted on a burger.

Tomato's are vile.

Ketchup and brown sauce are also vile.

Terry Pratchett books. On paper (badum tish) they're right up my street but I've tried a few and didn't like the jokey, waffly, self-referential style.

Aha, finally a chance for me to get on my high horse.

Sourdough Bread.

It's fine I suppose, it is not actively bad, but unless you go to a greasy spoon literally everything that is served with bread is sourdough. For one it tastes kinda, well, sour. When toasted the crusts can be utterly impenetrable with the de-rigeur butter knife. In many places, the crumb is so full of holes that the misbalance between crust and crumb is just so weird.

It's gotten to the point where sourdough is so ubiquitous that I am convinced everyone is just slightly suffering a mass delusion that it is somehow better.

If you have a plate with buttered / toasted slices of the following are presented: Soda bread, plain fresh white bread, fresh granary bread, french baguette, plain pan loaf, even a morning roll...and sourdough. I genuinely think you are lying to yourself if you choose sourdough bread over any of those.

Football or team sports in general.

I just don't get it. It's better now but certainly a few years ago other men looked at me like I had an extra arm when I replied to the default 'who do you support' with 'No one - I don't follow football'. Even more so when I don't watch England play in a championship match or indeed a final.

Mayo. Try buying a sandwich from a shop that doesn't contain mayo. It seems like the world is expected to want mayo on a sandwich.

See also: Fresh tomato. Does anyone actually enjoy that pip filled slime that comes out the middle? Especially when sliced and put on a sandwich?

No, I think everyone else is weird. 😁

This is the curse of the vegetarian. Order a beef burger, it comes with ketchup or chilli sauce or barbecue or some such; order the exact same thing with a veggie patty and they drown it in Satan's Semen. Why? Yes, it doesn't contain beef, but it's not a ****ing salad now is it.

As for "burger sauce," who thought a 50:50 emulsion of mayo and ketchup was a good idea?  That's the rosé wine of condiments, you don't know if your host likes red or white so you choose pink thus guaranteeing that everyone will dislike it.

As per johndoh,

My diet is tomato-heavy.  I live off pasta in tomato-based sauces; my favourite soup (outside of home-made) is tomato; I cane through bottles of ketchup; but raw tomatoes, that mix of semolina and catarrh makes me want to heave.

Whiskey neat. Fine with a mixer but otherwise it's how I imagine drinking petrol tastes.

Everyone says "oh you've just not had a good quality whiskey/whisky/bourbon". Bollocks, it all tastes awful and burns my insides while doing so.

Custard. Don't know why, but the thick yellow jelly-like custard of the 1970's just made me vom, and now I can't get over it.

Football as well. Next few weeks will be miserable, and I'll be hugely relieved when "we" are knocked out.

Grand Tours other than the TdF: Just don't seem to be able to get excited about them, but I try and follow the TdF each year.

Wine for me. Hateful stuff.

And anyone that likes wine always tells me you have to drink X amount before you appreciate it.

So ultimately you force yourself into liking it. Keep drinking it until your body gives in and stops convulsing as the gear hits your taste buds.

odd. very odd.

And never been a fan of steak. the only flavour comes from the sauce you dowse it in. (i dont eat meat anymore, but when i did, always found steak massively overrated. )

Coffee (unless part of a tiramisu, so with a ton of cream, sugar and booze to mask the taste)

Don’t have a sweet tooth either. Strongly ambivalent to chocolate

Big meals - I have a difficult relationship with food anyway but just don't get the the idea of sitting down to 4, 5 or more huge courses leaving you either feeling bloated and unwell or only fit to snooze away the rest of the day.

Wine, tea, coffee, ice cream (although I found a delicious Gelato maker but shes's moved to Devon), sports involving a ball, shopping, reality telly, soap operas, country and Western music, make-up, beauty products, wearing trousers, having a bath, chillies, mars bars, sand in your toes and really hot days.

Gosh I'm sad.

Sport - 'traditional sport' like football, cricket, tennis etc.

IPA especially if it comes in a fancy can.

Coffee - I don't get what a makes a 'good cup of coffee'...it all tastes like cr@p to me

Blue Cheese - I mean,why?

Coffee is another I should have added to my OP. Like steak and wine, it's another one where aficionados tell me I just haven't had a good one but it all just tastes like different flavoured dirt to me.

Lot's of dislike for raw tomatoes so far and whilst I tend to agree, I do eat them in salads if they're chopped and have had the slimy innards removed. Sun dried tomatoes on the other hand, and I could happily eat a whole jar of those.

Absolutely can't stand cucumber, although I think that's probably a more common dislike.

Branston pickle

It constatly baffles me that I don't like it. It does not compute at all. It ticks so many of my food boxes, being a combination of all the things I love, that it actually undermines my identity and sense of self that I absolutely hate the stuff. Its all so confusing.

I know this is petty and self-defeating but there are a couple of TV series and films' that close friends have kept repeatedly recommending to me in such an over-enthusiastic manner that I have secretly decided to myself that I'm now never going to watch them at all.

Tomato ketchup-I like tomatoes in every other form ( well apart from fried tomatoes obvs)

Buying clothes to be fashionable- I can’t understand how much money people are willing to spend on ‘ designer’ jeans for example

Eating outdoors, except when out on a walk, or on a ride, or whilst sailing etc. I have never enjoyed picnics or barbecues  because they are outdoors, but enjoyed the food or company, which would have been just as good indoors.

Sunbathing

Coffee.

Used to drink upto 10 mugs of the stuff daily, but the vile aftertaste got increasingly worse after covid.

Switched to tea, was fine for a while, but now standard teabags and "hard water" teabags are starting to leave me with an unpleasant aftertaste.

Never enjoyed taste of most "spirits." About only exception, which I rarely have these days, is variations on Baileys.

Jazz.

All the hip musos like myself seem to love jazz. 6Music squeezes some in at every opportunity. But I can't stand it, really offends my ears, even more than heavy metal... Well, maybe about the same.

Oh and Star Wars. I work in IT and colleagues seem obsessed with it. To me, it's a kids' film - yeah I enjoyed seeing it in 1977 but since, nah. Took my son to see some of the later films and they were junk too.

So ultimately you force yourself into liking it.

I can honestly say that I've never had to force myself to enjoy wine. Cask bitter? Nope still tastes like soap, but wine? Easy.

work social events

Thats perfectly rational though. Why would anyone actually like a work social event? I'd rather w*nk tramps than ever go on any 'work' event and have successfully managed to avoid them for my entire working life, basically by replying 'I'd rather w*nk tramps' when asked to attend

Similar to Spin's Terry Pratchett comment.... can't be doing with Slow Horses. Just not quite there for me after a lifetime of reading le Carré, and rewatching TTSS any time it's on iPlayer (see also Smiley's People).

Tried book one Slow Horses, just too slow moving, too much daft language and in jokes, and nothing happening that I could care about. Much as I have the hots for Kristen Scott-Thomas (in the bath in the English Patient) I can't bring myself to take out an AppleTV subs for a month to see if the adaptation is any better (with apologies to the multiple fanbois on the forum.....)

That gives me an idea... I'm going in invent a knife made for cutting through crusts on bread and toast... I shall call it.... a bread knife.

People and football/team sports seem to quite common responses so far.

Maybe that's why we've all gravitated towards cycling, because it's something we can do on our own or with the select few people we do like?

Doesn't explain why many of us don't like raw tomatoes though.

another for whisky, dad was an alcoholic and could drink a bottle of Bells/ Teachers, and then go to pub, house used to reek of it, tried the "good" ones, still does nothing for me.

Bananas, again a childhood thing i think, i know they are good fuel, but just the smell turns my stomach

Radiohead, i know they are supposed to be brilliant musicians, but his voice goes through me like nails down a blackboard.

...and another for football, there is no duller sound on the planet than two men discussing football....
