Wing mirrors come off really easily. You could remove that with your foot and drop it in a bin.
On the other hand, you might end up face to face with the owner in the Thunderdome

I got hit by a wing mirror once, doing 20-25mph, car doing 60+. Hurt quite a bit and made a loud bang as it kind of folded itself in then sprung back.
No way was that level of precision deliberate though, the margin between missing and just driving into the back of someone makes it totally unfeasible. If you wanted to do damage you could just sideswipe them or run them off the road or anything.
I'm calling bollix with Fossy on this.
If nothing else it's an MOT fail for sharp edges.

I'll guess the mirror was vandalised, prompting the fitting (by tape) of screws to act as a deterrent.

I managed to fold one back against the door pillar/A-pillar once. The road I used to cycle along on my way home from work had been deliberately narrowed by the council by putting a narrow cycle lane along each side, and removing the centre line. In places, the ‘cycle lane’ was narrower than my bike’s slight riser bar, and cars tended to drive close to the line. On this occasion, the traffic was moving slower than I was riding, and a driver, for some reason, stopped just as I was coming alongside, with her mirror inside the lane, which was inside the width of my bar, even with me almost touching the kerb. I hit her mirror really hard, folding it back the wrong way, and making quite a loud noise, I took a quick look back, and she had such a look of shock on her face!
As for damage to me, there was none, ‘cos I wore a pair of Oakley Factory Pilot full-finger gloves, which have carbon knuckle protection built in. Still got them upstairs somewhere, they saved my knuckles on many occasions when I clipped trees and branches, especially riding the unmarked trails up in the FoD.

When stopped at traffic lights and still looking at their telephone? Usually makes them jump out of their skin, although I find a fist downwards on the roof makes a much louder noise.
I do it as a pedestrian to phone-wielding drivers too, but less often as I'm much less likely to catch them up again. I believe I may have dented a door once too

my bet is some kids/chavs enjoy running along the pavement hitting the wingmirrors, and some enterprising diy car modifiers have come up with a plan to stop them.
technically 0 to 3 is an increase, but I'd hardly call it a growing trend.
