Mercedes made it clear they though Hamilton was overpaid. Had Hamilton been with another team Rosberg would be world champion by now. Hamilton's good but the car has been better. So I think it's not clear who will be at Mercedes in 2015 and beyond.

Turns out Will Stevens has paid ยฃ500,000 to drive this weekend. That's a lot of money to trundle round at the back of the pack.

Meh, more people have been into space than actually raced an F1 car since 1960*, seems comparatively cheap.

*I checked.

Are both Merc drivers not in contract though?

Or has LH not signed yet?

By that logic Hamilton is a better driver and deserves more money!

Mercedes can't complain he's overpaid - they were the ones who lured him away from McLaren with their generous spendies.

Not necessarily. It depends who his team mate 'might' have been if it wasn't Lewis.

LH has a contract with Merc for 2015. The discussion is about extending beyond that but obviously if something happened between LH/NR/Merc this weekend it could be to a point of meaning that a mutual end to the contract of one driver would be the outcome. I can't see it happening though. Both will want to be at Merc next year given that it's likely to still be the class of the field and regardless of who wins, each will want to beat the other in 2016 which will probably only happen if they're in a Merc.

In his previous 4yrs at Merc he has finished, 7th, 7th, 9th and 6th in the Championship. It'll be his 9th F1 year in 2015. If he does win he wont be regarded as a great or talked about for his style or tussles will he.

The car is good- anyone else would have given him a run for his money. Sorry I aint a fan of Nico.

Very interesting, but any current negotiations are for 2016 and beyond and if LH wins the championship in 2016 in a tight race against somebody from a different team in a car which isn't vastly superior in the same way (it seems extremely unlikely that it will be) I don't suppose they'll consider him overpaid then. All very well to realise in retrospect that they could have just hired Kobayashi to win the championship this year.

Maybe - I don't think there's any guarantee that Merc will have such an advantage next year let alone the year after. Such dominations tend to follow a significant rule change - with little changing for next year other teams can easily play catch up.

Nico's problem is that he fails to pass the first test as a driver which is beat your team mate. Yes I'm sure nico would be world champ if Lewis wasn't in the same team. But he is.

See Brawn GP for an example. Red Bull caught up in the same season then proceeded to dominate the next 4 seasons after that.

Yes but Brawn had no money to develop the car during the season - they say that the cars get approx 2 seconds faster through the year - that's what you saw RB catch up with.

Besides, RB didn't dominate for 4 seasons afterwards. 2010 was massively close and only tactical screw ups for FA and Webber saw Vettel win. In 2011, Vettel certainly won comfortably but JB beat Webber in the championship. 2012 again wasn't dominated by RB either. 2013 they certainly did though obviously.

It is the same car that Rosberg's driving. I assume you know this?

Hamilton's title to loose, all he has to do is follow Nico home.

He can do that, can't he..?

Nico will win by over 20secs to 2nd place. He'll lap everyone twice and Lewis will DNF.

The Mercedes F1 team is based in Brackley, Northamptonshire

... and the engines are built a few miles up the road at Brixworth

Well he'd better make sure he has a nice tight race then.

Actually I think I'll take that back - have been watching a lot today, and hadn't realised before how little they can change the engines for next year. At least the Merc customer teams can work with their packaging though.

Rosberg appears to be now playing mind games with Hamilton.... keeps saying Hamilton is under pressure, and that he hemself needs some help from Hamilton etc..... Hamilton will naturally race to win..... I expect some dirty tricks from Rosberg!

It wouldnt surprise me to see Rosberg backing up into Hamilton, and tempting him into a lounge or move...... Hamilton will need to keep his wits me thinks!

Finally the FIA have caught up with RBR and their flexi wings that have been flexing since 2010! This is probably the best thing so far this weekend. I hope they get further investigated, thrown out of the WCC and fined $100m.

Trying and failing - he should surely have worked out by now that he's as useless at this as he is at taking on LH in a head to head battle on the track. LH says he does not "pay much attention" to Rosberg's comments.

Hamilton is a spoiled little prissy, mummy's boy, douche bag. Wish he'd **** off. Gives drivers a bad name. He's about as manly as tampons. Really really really can't stand him. I thought everyone thought the same?

Loved the look on Nico and Lewis' faces when Alonso said he didn't know which team he'd be driving for in the press conference. ๐Ÿ˜†

A Nico/Lewis 1, 2 will still give Lewis the title so Nico has to force Lewis into an error. There could be contact so Lewis better make sure the damage to Nico's car is terminal or he'll have blown it big time.

Does anyone else feel that a deal was done between both parties after Spa as Nico has made lots of 'unforced errors' since and hasn't really fought with Lewis as hard on track either? Him out-qualifying Lewis at the last few meetings could be a way of saying he has the speed to win in a fair fight but hands are tied in the race?

Just putting it out there...

It would be out of character for Rosberg not to try and influence things where he can.
if he can keep Hamilton at bay into T1, I reckon he'll try to back him into the chasing pack down into T5 and hope for an incident.

I think Hamilton will desperately try to do Rosberg into T1 for that very reason if he can.
