Pep or Jurgen but that's never going to happen 🙂 so I would stick with Southgate and i think 99% of england fans would agree .
Alcohol doesn’t make me want to give people a kicking, I think there are a few other things culturally ingrained there that no one really want’s to examine
I agree , Sunday has shown up a few of them but alcohol is definitely one of them . Again just because you can get pissed and not cause problems doesn't mean that the conversation shouldn't happen .
This was England’s best performance in 55 years, who is this magical person that can do better than Southgate?
I want him to stay on, learn from it, maybe refresh his coaching team to evolve the attacking approach, but be given the chance.
But don't kid yourself there aren't other managers that have more experience, capability, nous, whatever. English? That's a tougher prospect. But what could eg: Klopp do with this group? Rodgers? Pep?
Educate your self and you will not look so daft
Maybe educate yourself on basic spelling before telling people that they won't look daft if they educate themselves.
Oh the ironing.
Also you picked two of the millions of definitions of racial group. Racism requires more than that. Power, prejudice being two. Again, if insulting the person rather than engaging the argument tickles our sporran, crack on. Maybe buy a dictionary first though.
Not convinced Mount does enough to be considered a ‘must start.’ Lots of nice looking touches, runs and flicks which never quite come off (at least at international level).
If he’s going to play Rice and Phillips - who were both great - I’d play Foden ahead of them as 10. Sancho will replace Sterling as automatic pick in the next few years.
Alternative managers? Pep I think needs to work more intensively with his team than an international manager would. Plus can you imagine his tinkering for a World Cup semi final? Klopp would be interesting, perhaps England would have been more likely to go for the jugular if he was in charge. Irrelevant though as neither would want the job!

Particularly as the left sided forward in a 3 man attack. Doesn't really do him a lot of favours that. It's one of the slightly odd decisions Southgate made.
Now a genuine 3 man midfield of him, Rice, Phillips, with anyone one of the wing options they have, and I'd include Grealish in that plus making Kane substitutable for a different look (one if our many pacey and large central attackers. ) Now that would make things interesting.
Really enjoyed watching England get beat.
Having seen the media's relief once Wales and Scotland were out.
Instantly forgotten - back to what matters...England, England, England.
Probably the best squad in the tournament - played immaculately.
But also relied on cheating as one of their most successful tactics - now known as the 'dark arts'.
And promoted by an obnoxious, arrogant media who push a vile brand of nationalism.
England's dickhead support isn't a few bad apples. It's the majority.
It represents the toxicity of a nationalism born out of an empire.
Of ideas of racial superiority that have never fully been challenged or questioned.
Watching the news after they got beat was joyful.
Full state funeral mode - no mention of the behaviour of the fans.
And English left types trying to kid themselves that a bunch of millionaires taking the knee represents a 'new England'.
Aye. No.
you cant tell me that those idiots who rushed the stewards were not 10 cans of stella in . S
But they probably can. There was an organised group that planned and executed their attack. They even kept each other updated on weaknesses and opportunities via Telegram They claim to have bribed Stewards to get in. I'm doubtful they were 10 cans of Stella in with that level of 'sophistication'.

Would you like salt and vinegar with that chip?

Just a bit of soccer banter. Don't take it so seriously.
Just like your hilarious fans dressed as Crusaders and singing about World War 2 bombers.

QED.
Oh well try being an Ireland fan. Hopeless at the moment not even the diaspora is bailing us out this time.
My usual retort to my England fan mates is were a small country...like Croatia!

Absolutely this - I think there is an assumption from some people on here that the disturbances on Sunday happened because people were drunk and I don't believe that is necessarily the case. As I said before, I can have a few beers and watch a football match (at home, in a pub or at a game) and it would never, ever cross my mind to kick off or force my way into a ground. The sort of people that planned and executed what happened on Sunday would do it with or without a few beers inside them - and most likely wouldn't have been 10 pints of Stella in. Yes I am sure some people will have followed them once the disturbance kicked off and I am sure some of them will have been drunk, but the perpetrators? I am not so sure.
There has been a fair bit of talk about the player of the tournament. Quite interesting that there has been so much debate and little conclusion. I'd say both finalists haven't particularly had an outstanding player but a group of players who have pretty much all played well. Few weak links, several players having their best performances for a while. By contrast, for example, Ronaldo had a pretty decent performance but Portugal did not.

Drink + Charlie + Arsehole = someone who thinks he's ****in invincible. A biking pal of mine is a cop in Glasgow, she's always on about these folk at weekends. Sounds horrific, the stories she tells tbh.
+ Arsehole
That's the bit that has been missing from some posts - it's not the drink that makes these things happen, it's the arsehole. And arseholes are arseholes with or without alcohol. They won't be remorseful now they are sober, they'll still be laughing about it, thinking they did something great. Because arsehole.
Just had a chat with the builder working next door.
He tells me that the final was a fix, that the score was known beforehand. I didn't manage to get any more from him before he was called away to berate the skinny layabout 'working' with him.
So has anyone else heard this almost-certainly-true theory?
So has anyone else heard this almost-certainly-true theory?
No but that's sensational. Did he mention if Brexit was a fix too?
Now you come to mention it, the similarities with events in America are astounding. A fixed match/election leads to a mob of arseholes trying to break into the home of democracy/football. Makes you think
I'll wear the hairshirt.
We're all sick of it, know of it, have seen it, have lived with it.
Some of us remember BMWs and VWs being trashed in the aftermath of '96.
It's a sickness, but it is highly localised on a pin prick.
In ages past, learned men earnestly debated about how many Angels could dance on the head of a pin.
How many racists dance around the head of this pin?
There will always be more good men than bad, however loud the bad men are.
Sorry for the rhetorical question but Is "Football's coming home" the shittest song ever?
I'm sure that some might argue that the conflation of under achievement and self entitlement is profound in it's aptness to the history of the England football team but it's probably the last thing I'd want to hear if I were kicking a ball around a pitch trying to win a football match.
Can we find a lyric in it that is inappropriate or politically incorrect or something, so that we can cancel it before the next world cup?
Sorry for the rhetorical question but Is “Football’s coming home” the shittest song ever?
"we're on the march with Allys army
Were going to the argentine
And we'll really shake them up
When we win the world cup
'cos scotland are the greatest football team"
Football songs are just carp are they not?
I like alcohol, I try to have a similar relationship to it as my Italian pal. I think of it as like a condiment and should be used sparingly.
I've been drunk plenty in the passed but now I (hopefully) have grown up a bit more. I have never been drunk around my children as I would feel ashamed of myself and wouldn't be setting a good example to them.
I think it speaks volumes about that a fair few of the England players had never even tried alcohol.
This was the first time I've watched England at a tournament and not got emotionally involved and I think I enjoyed it all the more for it. Probably living in Scotland might have helped this too as I wasn't surrounded by all the hype.
I really enjoyed the whole tournament including the England games. Yeah I wanted England to attack more and use some of the talent we have but Southgate did pretty well with the system he set out. Hopefully he can replicate this next year at the world cup.
I have said for a while though that if I was talented enough to play international football then I'd play for one of the other home nations as you get too much sh$t playing for England.
'The journalist Melanie Phillips has labelled the Black Lives Matter movement (and taking the knee) as “anti-Jew” and “deeply antisemitic” during an appearance on the BBC’s Politics Live show.'
That's going to play well.
You mean " the right wing demagogue" Melanie Phillips
Vile woman whos campaign against the liverpool care pathway condemned people to die badly.
Sorry for the rhetorical question but Is “Football’s coming home” the shittest song ever?
Beg to report, it is actually an excellent song. It's a shame the lyrics are such unutterable mawkish tosh, but Ian Broudie is a genius and that song is 24-carat pop gold. Annoyingly. Because I am completely sick of it. 😆

Was saying this the other day. There was a clip aired on the BBC of Shearer being interviewed during Euro96. We had just won - and this was in the context of all the tabloid scandals about the england team being a bunch of boozy ****s (Dentist's Chair and all that) - and he concluded by rather stroppily saying something like "....and I think we're all going to celebrate with a little drink tonight, if that's ok with you? <teenage scowl>"
It was a contrast to all those interviews with Raheem Sterling this year, always just saying "yeah that was a good performance, but we're not going to get carried away - back in training tomorrow to focus on the next match".
But also relied on cheating as one of their most successful tactics – now known as the ‘dark arts’.
Seen this a lot. Well, certainly in a lot of Guardian comments anyway. It's funny how it has become a sort of prevailing narrative, when probably the two most iconic, viral moments in the whole tournament are:

You mean ” the right wing demagogue” Melanie Phillips
Melanie Phillips is basically Katy Hopkins with a library card.
Have we done the England players turning down a reception at Downing Street?

Not heard that one yet, but did wonder that I hadn't heard of one taking place yet

It's absolutely not the prevailing narrative of the media.
While there's plenty about claimed injustices inflicted on England by the 'cheating foreigners', there's little self-analysis or questioning of the English team's reliance on diving and simulation.

I read an article somewhere, maybe the Athletic which basically said Kane & Sterling were denied some pretty clear freekicks in the final as the ref had made up his mind in advance that they had dived their way through the tournament.

I don't buy that - refs are monitored and are relegated from officiating top games if they don't perform to the expected level. And if the ref was dishing out punishment to Kane and Sterling, he'd have had a field day with the Italian team (especially Im/mobile).
It's certainly true that the ref who red carded the Welsh player disappeared soon after. And the Uefa referee chief has said both the Sterling Penalty and the nit-red to Jorginho were correct (although the reasoning was pretty dodgy). I don't know how much the performance at e.g. the Euros would affect the Champions League. Kuipers is 49 though I think, so nearly aged out. Refs look at things a certain way, that'll never change. He did seem determined not to give Kane any free kicks, even though he definitely could have. I'm not sure I buy it as they describe it but I could certainly use it happening.
If only the Queen could withdraw the offer to form a Government based on racist messages in the media

Yeah he let a lot go, but I thought that was to the benefit of the match overall. It's a tricky line to tread but I reckon he got it about right.
