Haha, that helicopter was always parked up when I used to ride my bike along the Middlewood way.

Disley is quite nice. Has all the little independent shops, railway station, near gorgeous countryside, close to lots of mtbing trails. Downside are the house prices ( a little on the high side) and of course proximity to the A6.

That should be reason enough! What else do you want? The moon on a stick?

I'd have a look on the north side too. Prestwich, Whitefield etc.

Road bike commute on the A6 would be OK surely? Uphill on the way back like but you could always make it one way with a train ride home in the evening if the miles were a bit excessive.

Yeah, I quite like proper rural Cheshire; my sister lives in Sandbach. Bit flat though for gnarly off-road pursuits.

Easy access to Manc and the 'Pool workwise though I suppose.

For me it has a great mix of shops - very close to the motorway network - cheapish housing but above all steep sided valley for biking and walking.

Also 'steps of doom' within 5 mins of steam train station

Marsden's nice. Hayfield station is long gone, the sett valley trail is now a bridleway from New Mills to Hayfield

It's fine, I ride it regularly. Not "pleasant" but fine.
From New Mills/Marple/Romiley, there's actually mostly off-road commuting right into Manchester on towpaths, cycle lanes and old railway lines. It's lovely in summer.

Fwiw marple/disley commute to the Christie takes me 20 mins, i have set off at 6.45 and it means i get to work an hour early but on the plus side i can have a shit and read the paper/play angry birds with a bit of peace & quiet.

Heading south, once you're through Hazel Grove the A6 is fine to cycle. I do it regularly. It's single carriageway and nice and wide. I've never felt unsafe or had proximity issues with the many HGVs that use the route.

The other direction, through Hazel Grove and towards Stockport, would be a bit hairy. I've done it once (as far as Stepping Hill).

You know Disley is the only sensible option. Cant be more than a 40min train journey into town. The station carpark even used to be free - well it was about 20 years ago 🙂

The moorside hotel is no longer - heard it's gonna get converted into a supermarket which will **** you over on the traffic front

Oh and Disley has the best bike shop - miles better than 18 bikes - Freeride cycles it's mint!

There's all sorts of rumours flying round about the moorside. Can't see it becoming a supermarket though. Rumour i heard was that it was to become a residential outdoor activity centre specialising in courses for "bad lads"

I used to work at the Moorside part time when still at school. The general behavour of the people who typically went there for weddings and xmas partys would put young offenders to shame.

There's a bit of a buzz going around a certain establishment that the Moorside could be becoming a Prison Service Hospice.

I heard it was going to be a nuclear waste dump, now the Cumbria ones been scuppered. The hideous physical deformities caused by any radiation leak, would simply pass unnoticed amongst the local population 😀

We've just moved up north about a month ago.

Was looking around Cheadle Hulme initially, but preferred Poynton as it felt a bit more like a small town than a suburb.

But... then we decided to go north of Manc instead, and I'm glad we did as we got a much bigger house for our money and we're living in a really nice area with great schools right on the edge of the countryside.

The pies aren't bad either.

Where do you work (if you dont' mind me asking? I like Hayfield but I thought that it'd be an arse commuting wise?

I work in Stockport. I leave at 7am and I'm in Stockport by 7:35. The odd day takes 45 minutes but more often than not I'm there in just over 30 minutes. The return journey is pretty much the same, leave at 4pm and home by 4:40 and out on the bike by 5:30 after a quick tea 🙂

I'd rather spend 15 minutes extra in the car and live somewhere nice with awesome trails then make do with somewhere else. That's literally the decision we made 12 months ago when we bought our first house.

All this fuss about the A6 is overblown, yes it's busy but show me a road into a city which isn't?

The local rag suggests the moorside in Disley will be a naughty boys home. Shame, it's a nice spot.

Glossop is an inconvenience, better if was just a cross road & a Greggs

So, sort of pretentious, twee tea-shop country overrun with posh southern property speculators? It does seem to have changed quite a lot over the last couple of days. I guess that's the pace of modern life for you... 😉
