I have repaired a broken post. It is cast Iron and the finial snapped off many years ago. I've welded it back together using nickel rods and the weld seems good (for my welding!). Problem is the cast iron is rusty and full of patina. Where I've welded it the cast iron has rusted again, within hours, the nickel is still very shiny. Given that nickel is used as a protective plating I'm thinking it won't get very tarnished any time soon. Any ideas for what might turn it rusty brown, or at least not shiny?
sandblast the whole post and paint it black

No way. It has 150 years of patina, as does the rest of the fence. It would look totally out of place if it looked like new.
Wire brush with a non stainless steel brush..and water...memory not 100% but bleach might help speed up
Used to see plenty of stainless steel with rust because that is how people had "cleaned" it
