[Closed] Stupid Christmas gift idea that got out of hand?

I've just spent £55 kitting out my entire family with small Nerf guns for Christmas.

It started out as a £10 stocking filler for my 4 year old daughter, then one for me, obviously as she can't play on her own. Then it seemed unfair that my Mrs could get caught in the crossfire without a way to defend herself.

One the plus side, there's 11% cashback @ toys-r-us at the moment from topcashback.

awesome fun

TOP TIP

Do not convince your kids it is painless to be hit by shooting yourself in the winky and then catch the end of your winky with said disc
It is not painless and everyone will laugh at you.

I've got my boss one for his secret santa, so he can shoot his son in the eye- good prices at house of fraser btw.

So it's just possible that everyone else in my family is getting a Firestrike for Christmas. And I'm getting an N-Strike Elite Spectre REV-5 BLASTER!!1! It's got a silencer ffs. And what seems to be a NATO rail mount.

I got three (yes three!) last christmas. Gave the 2 smaller ones to the kids and kept the machine-gun one for myself - i'm not so daft!

Anyway I've just got the missus one of their female gender-specific crossbows for christmas this year.

Let battle commence!

I'd convinced myself that I'd been a good enough boy to deserve a pair of shiny Salsa QR skewers in red.

Now...now trying to quash the little voice telling me I deserve a Whyte T-130 S.

Somebody help me.

Hang on a minute.

So you bought one for your daughter for £10.

Then bought two for £35 for you and your wife.

I think its incredibly unfair that your daughter is not in charge of the household defence budget and has therefore been outgunned by you and your wife.

Getting out of hand?
I bought a t-shirt that had a picture of one of the German battleships in Scapa Flow.
Which became a desire to dive on that battleship.
Which became a need to do a deep diver course
Which costs as much to do in Scapa Flow as it does to fly to Malta, stay in a hotel, do the course and fly home again.
Which isn't as much fun (or as expensive) as getting the train home. From Malta.

Bl00dy expensive t-shirt that turned out to be.

Try not to get shot in the eye with one of the velcro tipped Nerf bullets, it hurts...a lot!!

I like the idea of NERF guns, but I'm quite OCD about keeping all the bits of toys together, so seeing the bullets get lodged behind sofas/TV's fired over the neighbours fence kinda fills me with OCD horror!

I used to have a RATS (Robot Anti-Terror Squad, I think) disc launcher thing that fired plastic discs out at a tremendous rate. Only problem was I always had to find them all again before I could fire the next barrage....

One of these:

All guns are of an equal value, seemed daft not to purchase additional ammunition.

Big M +1
As mentioned in the other Nerf thread - get an N-Strike with full-auto, disassemble, punch out the centre of the air restrictor, fit a stronger spring, use more powerful batteries... enjoy!

I've often thought about these for my boy (5) but was put off as it says it's for 8+ (and also my Daughter (3) would want one. Do you think your Daughter will be okay with them? Or am I just being a wuss?

For little ones you could get them the the NERF N-STRIKE ELITE TRIAD EX-3 Blaster
as recommended in this blog:
https://allnerdity.wordpress.com/2013/10/09/5-best-nerf-guns-for-office-combat/
Just about the right size for little hands, and easy to cock, you just pull down the projecting bit at the bottom of the handle; they have surprisingly good range. You could also fit them out with some cheap protective glasses with those tether things on the arms to help keep them on smaller heads.
Even simpler is this one, the Jolt, £4.99 from Argos: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/9115769.htm?CMPID=GS001&_$ja=cgid:18091993285|tsid:59156|cid:189934165|lid:96721106725|nw:g|crid:59951588965|rnd:12646861679339663208|dvc:t|adp:1o1
These sort of glasses I'm sure would please the kids no end: http://www.amazon.com/DeWalt-DPGS91-1C-Renovator-Safety-Glasses/dp/B002IVTXCA

Will she be OK? Depends how good a shot she is! Pretty sure she'll be fine cocking it, if jot it will be a valuable lesson in alliance building. Maybe I'll get her a copy of The Prince* next year to help with that.

There not a lot of point me worrying about the safety of nerf guns when I let her ride bikes and horses.

*can you imagine what a horrible idea that'd be?!
