Numerous reports of trees down across roads tonight in and around Aviemore including the A9 just north of here.
Bit breezy and on and off heavy showers in Manchester. Some debris about. Took it easy on M60 earlier in the van. Son is on nights in a HGV tonight - it's a double decker trailer so 16ft high (just under 5m). Even more of a challenge as he passed his HGV a month ago.
Powers off and the watering can blew over in the garden. Nethy bridge. Heard a few chainsaws already so I expect there's some trees down.
rattling the windows and roof in Edinburgh
Turns out I'd not fixed the leaky roof....
Mountain biking weekend in the lakes for me, already cancelled today's ride ☹️
On the plus side, my group are staying in a pub 😁
Lakes looks to have had it quite badly, various flood warnings in place, a fair few road closures due to flooding and/or fallen trees.
Here (northern edge of the Peaks) seems relatively clear but we're in a bit of a dip and yesterday was pretty constant rain. Never torrential but just unrelenting. Can see the next band of rain on the rain radar app drifting southwards towards us now...
“Lost communication” with Tiree apparently.
Very wet and very windy all of yesterday up here on top of Scapegoat Hill. No damage so far, although I did watch one of next door's hens lay the same egg twice.
Storm in a Yorkshire teacup. I was working outdoors last night, just off to do the same today. Keep clutching those pearls, ladies!
Given Yorkshire is 300 miles south of where the storm hit that is hardly surprising.
Just been up on the roof for the 2nd time this year repairing storm damage following Eowyn in January.
Manchester was calm overnight but it's picked up a bit, and it's constantly chucking it down - windy but not storm level.

Yep, could see that rain band coming in. It's just going to be like this most of the day now. 🙁
A pilot friend of mine is flying out of Manchester later on...

Uh... No...I think you've just been lucky and missed the storm.
I wonder if that weather station survived the night, or just has a delay updating? Locally the observed weather is available all the way to the current time.
Was pretty wild last night, south lakes, winds back to just blooody windy now but its put some water down, off to inspect the drainage in a mo. The Joys.

My son has recently passed his HGV licence. He was on nights last night going to Rugby and back with a double decker trailer - 16ft high - about as big as you get. Very sketchy on the way back with an empty trailer.
Easing off in East Lancs now. Worst was around 4am.
Crab apple blown over in the garden (NW Derbyshire). Not much in the big scheme of things but it was a lovely small tree.
Depending on how much space it has, and how much of the root ball has pulled out of the ground, a tree can often survive if the roots are covered over. Willows do it all the time, and I’ve seen really quite big trees carry on so long as there’s a fair amount of root for the tree to draw nutrients from.

Admittedly it’s got plenty of water available, but that willow above has had bit of a hard life!
Fingers crossed, your apple might survive ok.

Patchy heavy rain here (S. Manchester) throughout the day although the wind is now easing. Tomorrow still looks damp though.
Not been anywhere near as bad as the north has had it, but it was pretty windy down here, steady 22-25mph at ground level, went along to the club this morning to get some practice in before we start archery indoors in a couple of weeks, didn’t even set my bow up - there were a couple of people already there, and the wind was directly in our faces, the gusts were blowing the arrows off the rests on the bows, and the target bosses, which are a timber frame with foam packed in, about two metres high, and a bit over a metre wide, had to be staked down to stop them being blown flat! That could result in around £100+ worth of arrows being trashed! We’ve had one blown clean over the brook that runs down one side, and into the next field in the recent past. They aren’t light, either.
Everyone decided to call it a day and put everything away where it’s sheltered.
I went windsurfing. Very testing conditions but good fun in a just about manageable way
Power off now for 24 hours, SSE hoping to get it back by Monday.
Cooking on wood burner and eating by candlelight. Just like the good old days
I was thinking of going to watch Cardiff play Ebbw Vale yesterday, but the posts blew down.
Ratherbe.... Gotta be worth a try, especially if some roots are still in ground, good luck.
No point in trying to upright the tree but value in piling soil against the root plate so it doesn't dry. Tree may well phoenix and is a form of veteranisation. Bit of soil mounding where limbs touch the ground may also help suckering.
Sunny and a bit blowy down here in Essex....
A few stray wheelie bins and litter strewn about, but that might just be the norm. 🫤
Our power came back on a couple of hours ago after 30 hours - even the mobile phone network was down.
Wind speeds were phenomenal, exceeding 100mph. Our polydome greenhouse got flattened fortunately it can be rebuilt with a new cover. Lots of trees down - there are quite a few mature oaks simply toppled. Tops of trees simply snapped off. Quite a few locals saying it was the worst storm they’d experienced in their lifetime.
Both the lifeboat and fire crews were out Friday night. Lifeboat was called to assist a yacht dragging its anchor / risk of grounding. The yachtsman refused assistance unless towed to Oban, despite having an injured hand, meanwhile getting nearer to shore so the smaller, Oban lifeboat also had to assist and managed to tow the yacht to a safe anchorage. The crew got back safely at 1am after 6 hours - let’s just see some crew members weren’t entirely happy with the conduct of the yachtsman.
Saw that the Lochaber MRT were out on the Ben both Friday and Saturday to carry off exhausted walkers - WTF goes out in those conditions/ with that forecast?
Some commenting that the level of local warning were inadequate and underestimated the severity - no advance text warnings were sent. This is the second severe storm this year and the resilience of power / phone network has shown to be inadequate. The power could have come on 12 hours earlier but there was no-one with the authority available here to restore it. Only one of the 3 mobile masts here has a back-up generator - both ends of the island 50 miles apart left without coverage. Those few people with old copper landlines were able to make/receive calls.

An astounding level of shithousery right there.

On a tangent, daughters’ school does a charity of the year thing. No. 1 put in the local MRT as her nomination as the demand is anecdotally going up and up.
Was chatting to another parent at some kids’ thing and he was telling me a horror story about a work crack at the Yorkshire three peaks, where one of the participants turned up dressed in black on a hot day, and was seen cutting the labels off her boots in the car park at the start line. Team leader’s face fell and he said to someone quietly that there was no way they were going to make it round…

I think the RNLI version contextualises it more appropriately

I’d prefer the comments from a number of crew members I’m acquainted with and who were actually there rather than the sanitised press release.
Parts of Ardgour and Ardnamurchan are expected to be without power till 8pm on the 6th of October

^^ fair enough. I can see why the guy didn’t want to abandon his boat, an act that would almost definitely have resulted in it being wrecked, and in the end he made a decision which resulted in both him and his yacht being fine, but that’s down to a degree of luck, and in hindsight I guess.
On the other side I can see the frustrations of the crew, plus the fact that because of his decision, 2 lifeboats were tied up for excess time where they may have been needed elsewhere. I would hope that the yacht skipper will be making g a meaningful donation the the RNLI Station…

Cairngorm MRT were out on Saturday too. 🙄
My thanks to those who've advised on the crab apple.
The trunk has torn away from many of the roots at ground level and the whole thing has pivoted over, dragging a stake with it. It's also in fairly limited space. I have photos but.......
I think it's knackered but am getting professional advice.
