over the last couple of months we've been getting some pretty ugly little spiders about the house - black body and legs, quite squat, stocky things that are darker than the ones I'm used to seeing about. They're nasty looking little things, and quite aggressive too - catch one in a glass and it will always come to the side of the glass you're at and bear its fangs. I'm used to house spiders and welcome them, but these are just grim. I'll upload a pic later.
One came stalking across the sofa at me last night, and another dropped out of our 4 month old's sling the other week too.
harmless, or time to call john goodman?
I'm in Sheffield btw

😆
I'm sure they 'grr' too
They're called Sheffield Death-Bringers iirc
easily confused with the south-yorks baby carer?
Sounds more like an invading force of Derbyshire werespiders. You will die.

Look up "false widow" spiders. Could be your new house guests.
We need Roper he is the mac daddy on Arachnids

It might be one of these http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Segestria_florentina
It may be time to move out of Sheffield and nuke it from space....
It would seem living in the UK is no protection from creepy-crawlies anymore, no-where is safe!
^^^^
These things live in the UK? FFS I'm leaving, they look irradiated!
from the link up there it looks most like a purse web or mouse spider. But uglier.
I don't think mouse spiders live in the UK, not sure about the rest of Europe Europe either?
If it's a purse spider look at Atypus affinis. They are the only known mygalomorph spiders in the UK. If you get close to an angry one you might hear it stridulate.
I think it might be this

if anyone can post the pic I took on this phone I'll email it through
Googles "mygalomorph" and "striduwotsit"
pook mail it me. Moseydo@hotmail.co.uk and i'll post it up.
The Hacklemesh weaver has a smily face tattooed on its bum, must be friendly
parkes, ygm
Nice Hadge - think he'd easily polish off my corn snake. Right fancy a red tailed boa but Mrs Danny has put her foot down for now...
Cheers

Aargh, tis a Caribbean Hammock Web, the wooden leg gives it away
The actual spider in question.
That glass is massive by the way.
(actually, spider is about the size of a 10p piece)
I can't tell from that photo. If it has large vertical fangs then I'd go with a Atypus affinis. If not then a clearer dorsal view would be needed. Whatever it is it looks like a female, if that helps 🙂
Beautiful boa Badge. Is it fully grown?
That is an ugly spider!
Roper - what else could it be? if I know the options I could google and try to see if I can work it out. Could anything be risky to my little lad?
Shelob not got you yet Pook?
That Spider looks the sort to crawl into your ear while you are sleeping
Check your body for any unusual lumps that move independently when you prod them.
I got told i'd go blind doing that.
I bet it made a right mess when you squished it.
you did squish it, right?
nope. Caught in a glass and released humanely.
There has been more than one too. This was the third
All the squat black spiders in my house (also Sheffield) have been replaced by pholcids, though there were a lot of squat black spiders around for a short time. I'm sure they're relatively harmless.

You threw out Mummy!
Just wait until Dad & the kids find out 😯
Get a bird? (As per nursery rhyme - don't you know nuffink? 😆 )
