[#2605885]

I've posted a few times on the camera threads trying to get my head around the most appropriate SLR-ish camera which I'm planning to buy as a present for my wife.

After having read comments on here, about a million reviews, doing a bit of pixel peeping, going into shops to fondle, and pretty much overthinking the whole thing by at least a magnitude or two, I'm leaning towards the Sony A55 with a Sigma 18-250.

Anyone have user experiences with either the body or lens they'd like to share?
Most interested in realistic accounts of day to day life with the camera, as I've really read too many clinical reviews.

I've never used one, but a friend got one and is very pleased with it. He mainly uses it for video though - is that something that interests you? It looks to have very good video capability and unlike DSLRs has decent autofocus.

Thanks grum.
Video isn't central, although will probably use it a bit if it's there.
One of the attractions is related though -- good autofocus in liveview, and since I'm expecting to use the flippy screen quite a bit for weird angle/covert shots, I anticipate that will be useful...

I also liked the liveview autofocus when I looked at A300s. Particularly that you could set it to continually focus even without pressing the button. So by the time you've got the camera to your eye and looked through the viewfinder (or at the screen) it's already focused, making the camera feel amazingly fast (and in practice, BE amazingly fast).

Lots of users on dyxum.com. Either ask there or have a dig around.

I've got one, I like it. The flippy LCD screen is one of the very best I've seen(fit a toughened glas protector though cos it gets knocked a lot when flipped), though to be fair it needs to be as the view through the view finder is pretty cramped due to the second sensor(for the liveview) in there.

The handling is good. The shutter response time in liveview is pretty damn fast.Relatively light for it's size. Spare batteries, powerpacks and pretty much any other accessory are cheap.

I reckon it's just as good all round as the comparably priced Nikon and Canon bodies I tried, but without all the brand snobbery hoo hah that goes with them. All my old Minolta Dynax lenses fit it as well.

The lens? I've no idea.

Judging by the view finder comment I suspect you have the a550 not the a55.
