Ah - was going through our band playlist (we have a sax) and forgot that one has a sax solo. Though I prefer the sax solo on this instrumental version which is what we cover
Anyway, Dire Straits and long sax solo intro
Muddy_bum's post reminded me of this. Proper sax classic
A 9 minute tease which just builds and builds, all the while accompanied with some brilliantly judged sax playing by Philippe Nadaud. Candidate for the best techno track eva. You're welcome.
Awesome track Rusty Shackleford!
I could go on all day! My old man played sax, probably why I like it. 🙂
Must be the newest thing on here. At 2:30 a second of sax 🙂
and Bowie's last album had lotsa sax
Sax, followed by fake electronic sax, is the sh*ttest musical instrument
You opened the thread just to write that?
fake synth sax is indeed rubbish, but real sax is ace (and it's not even the instrument I play, though I keep wishing I'd learned). fake sax not quite as bad as fake trumpet (that is what I play) though IMHO - and there is really awful fake trumpet on some recent tracks.
Ian Dury once said that the sax was the nearest sounding instrument to the human voice.
Definitely not fake sax
Surprised we've got this far without mention of Lou Reed's Walk on the Wild Side, also a strong contender for "most frustratingly premature fade out in music history" as you never get to hear a great sax solo resolved.
snarky puppy is excellent.
Okay how about...
"I'll loin to woik the saxophone...
I'll play just what I feel,
Drink scotch whisky all night long,
And die behind the wheel"
Alternatively...
(Final edit to say bjork singing the Anchor song, unamplified, at the Union Chapel is probably the best live music I've experienced.)
A true classic:
I'm amazed not to have seen this one yet
Some serious joy of sax in there.
Slight suspicion that this might've been "fakesax", but it ain't. 3mins in
🙂
I've recently started playing (trombone) in a Big Band which is educating me in a whole new genre. There's generally about 8 saxes and sometimes they all get a go. Current faves are Sing Sang Sung (more clarinet than sax tbf) and Birdland. Not sure if either of them count as 'songs' but hope you'll let me off.
Getting all those paps, pahs and peowws in the right place is tricky I can tell you!
One of my favourites.
How do you do that embedding picture thing ?
The Pinkster reminded my of Neneh's early horny band
Put that link in the box that pops up when you press the 'video' button above the reply box
or do ##### around it if you like to do your own html
The horrorpunk visual hides a cracking tune behind it.
Theatre of Hate and Spear of Destiny both had sax players. A fave from long long ago
That ^^ brought this to mind. Awesome 😀
Motels - Total Control gets my vote.
For it's gonzo sax solo
and another vote for X Ray Spex - Oh Bondage
Is there voting?
I forgot this! This is my vote then
Not sure if either of them count as 'songs' but hope you'll let me off.
Well if we're going there, I guess people on here might like Too Many Zooz
What next Moonlight Serenade? 😉
Darts - Don't Let It Fade Away. Class
Sometimes the sax solo doesn't cut it though.
Though the best sax piece I've seen played is Andy Scott's "Dark Rain", a concerto for 2 saxes.
Yousson N'Dour Without a Smile. Off the top of my head this is XXX Marsalis playing along in a new yourk session. Wommat is a great album.
We had anything from Electric Warrior?
Always loved the end of this

Don't talk shite,
Galaxy 2 Galaxy - Hi-Tech Jazz
808 State - Pacific State
As is often the case in techno, synths are used in the studio, and live on stage.

In which case it's synth, not sax and doesn't belong in this thread. Fine if you like synth, but it's not the same at all. Are you really suggesting that sounds anything like proper sax?
Sounds like a sax to me on the 808 State track.
This thread has surprised me, how many bands using sax I really like!
I'm sure there are some Beck songs, not sure which though. Was a big fan of the Psychedelic Furs first album, which had sax on every song...

Sax Solo
Meanwhile, another unique element adding to the atmosphere of 'Pacific State' is the soprano saxophone that serves as a counterpoint to said bass line
Howard Walmsley, who played the sax in Biting Tongues, had left his soprano from a session the night before, and so I picked it up and just had a go. I'd played the clarinet and was a bit of a have?a?go saxophone player, but I was not a real saxophone player. Still, I could crank out a melody, and I think my limited ability made it what it was.
Well aracer turns out 'bit that sounds like a saxophone...is actually a saxophone.
What a shocker, I don't know what you thought it sounded like, a banjo?

er, no - the bit that sounds like a clarinet is actually a saxaphone (my ears aren't quite well enough tuned to spot the difference). I had thought it strange that they had a real clarinet player to go with the synth sax - there's quite a distinct difference.
now now, no bickering on a nice music thread!
Found a Beck
I must get Crime of the Century by Supertramp on i'm sure has to be sax on it
I know that jazz is not overly popular on here, but no mention of the saxophone can exclude:
Charlie Parker, John Coltrane or Sonny Rollins.
Moving on then I don't think we've done this one
