I get the piss taken about my dyed hair even though it isn’t.

Tazzy & John, yes dying hair as a teenager is completely acceptable as a means of upsetting and alienating parents, providing that other, more socially acceptable methods such as drugs, motorcycles, abandonment of education etc have already failed.

But in middle age?
Might as well start looking at Harleys and having affairs with your daughter's friends.
'Cos that's what will happen. 😀

What would you recommend for that rugged, experienced yet youthful look then?

Cement should be good for that. For the post apocalyptic burnt look 🙂

In that photo up there ^^^^^, Footflaps is the one on the left so not really qualified to comment on greyness 🙂

Every time I trim my beard I notice a bit more grey. I'm quite looking forward to the full Sean Connery look.
I used to live next door to someone with a combover. I couldn't look at him without laughing.
It would be the same if someone I knew had grey hair and turned up one day with it not grey.

If it's just a couple of grey hairs you could pluck them.

I've been feeling self-conscious about looking like an "old" dad

Dunno when exactly, but I came to a startling realisation a few years ago and it was like a huge weight was lifted:

IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT PEOPLE THINK ABOUT YOU.

I always think I still have brown hair till I see a photo of myself

This.

I stopped colouring my hair when I started to go grey (used to always be dicking around with it) as I didn't want people to think I was hiding something.

Well thanks to my fantastic auto-immune system, I've had grey/white patches of hair since I was 10 and a comb over/curtain thing to cover a bald patch(Alopecia areata) the shape of Africa on the back of my head(age 33) now thankfully gone.
So going grey camoflagues the patches I have had for 30 years and I no longer get asked daily if I've been painting!

thought about it as i am starting to grey at 42 - not even Clooney levels [ or looks mind]

I then realised I still had all my hair and it was just a slippery slope tbh that ends with some of the pics above or a comb over and a wig.

We are getting old - deal with it
FWIW being a dad suddenly made me feel a lot older[finally an actual proper grown up with real responsibilities] than i did the weeks before- you get over it - trust me when you do the school run you wont be the oldest dad or the oldest looking - sometimes I am not sure if the grandparents are dropping them off or the parents - folks may think that of me though 😳

I agree with the other ladies that have posted - go grey gracefully and don't dye it!

This is true.

Being 30 and mostly grey, I am one of the greyest dads at school but in our area I'm probably the youngest dad in my daughters year, year 1 shes 5.

Don't worry about it.

Well, I'm going to buck the trend with my opinion!

So ... if you're genuinely not happy with your hair then get it coloured. I would suggest that a hairdresser would have the necessary expertise as opposed to a barber. To avoid the 'flat' colour look, several differing shades using foils can appear more natural. Would possibly need doing every 6-8 weeks so you need to factor in the cost.

All family on my mother's side went grey at an early age and, in fact, I only remember my mother as having grey hair when growing up.

I got my first grey hairs aged 18 and, believe me, I couldn't get it coloured quick enough! This may or may not have had something to do with boys. 🙂

Hope the family are well dd. 🙂

Alternatively just don't look in the mirror if you're unhappy with your hair colour!

Let it go grey, grow it long and start cosplaying as Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII.

Off with your head! if that's a bit messy wear one of those things old ladies wear after they've had their hair done.

Vain? For Men of course. We expect our Ladies to keep up the maintenance and hair colouring is as normal as breathing for girlies 🙂

I just created this image especially for this thread and then realised that with grey hair, the troll does indeed look older! Arghhhh!

very funny thread, cheered my lunch break up no end, fab.

I think you have yer answer, if you're a youth it might be ok to dye your hair but otherwise you will be mocked and scorned by all. My mid life crisis is to grow my hair long and return to the metal days of my youth. I am blessed and continue to have thick hair. Although it is very grey in places and grey hair has a different texture. I'm aiming for somewhere between the brad pitt channel look and a dodgy metal biker. NOT the Terry Nutkin look! I dont really care if it works or not... its a hobby, an interest. 😉

Have you thought of ramming your face with chips and burgers, becoming morbidly obese, and neglecting your personal hygiene until you develop some horrific skin conditions, and a fetid, noxious aroma wafts from your person? Then clad all this (lets call it the New Bravissimo!) in some garish polyester, quilted leisurewear.

That way you can look in the mirror and weep gently yourself without even noticing your hair?

Result!!!

You'd be better off with a really nice haircut than a dye job. Looking at Clooney and Cooper, I'd say Clooney is older anyway (I mean he is as it happens, but he looks older too)
