I was surprised to see the bookies had Penny Mordaunt as the favourite, as I had never even considered her. And who the hell is Tom Tugendhat?!?!
I suppose, seeing as it's going to be a leadership contest, then there's kind of two types of candidiate- the one we'd like to have, and the one the Tory faithful are most likely to choose. In my experience they are pretty far from being the same!

Plus he is a Catholic Jew with French nationality which is quite amusing for a British Prime Minister to be.

I'm guessing that it'd be too late now, but on balance would it be worth the £25 to join the party to have a vote for the least-worst leader? Like some people did for Corbyn. Or would the damage from extra Facebook ads they could buy with my money outweigh the benefit? Obviously if you do this you'd hope it'd never come out that you were a member, for the sake of your reputation.
The received wisdom up until last time was that it was never the early favourites, as some get knocked out their supporters coalesce around a lower profile candidate.
Obviously Johnson blew that out the water, but I think we could see something like that happen again this time.
So it won't be truss or sunak, might be mordant, might be Wallace.

It's mad how the guy we all hated for ****ing the NHS now seems like a beacon of sanity in the context of the current Tory party.
Given how he did such an effective job of banishing the moderates and surrounding himself by career yes men, I fear that whilst Johnson's replacement won't have his "charisma" (take that however you like) he or she will still be cut from the same cloth simply because of the party that he has created!

Getting rid of Blowjob really is only the tip of the iceberg. Letting him stand as an MP in the first place (I bet David Cameron severely regrets letting him stand for that seat rather than attempting to stand for London Mayor again!) has caused untold damage, it was always obvious that someone with his character and desire for celebrity would jump on any bandwagon that gave him a platform to further his career, and the hard of thinking were always going to lap up any bullshit that he could feed them, so once he threw his hat in the ring with the Brexit referendum the situation we are in now was always inevitable I am afraid!
If we recover from Johnson's impact within a generation I will be VERY surprised... 😔

He is, as Trump himself said, Britain's Trump... He stood staunchly in the face of the inevitable, literally denying it, preparing himself to carry on business as usual. He has put celebrity above policy over and again, he has created a movement who care significantly less for substance (to the point that they are very prepared to forgive unforgivable behaviour!) than they do for emotion, and he has pushed the idea that the PM is above the law over and over again!
The fact that he has (more by luck than judgement) managed to make a few decisions that have resulted better than they perhaps might have done is merely coincidental. A broken clock is right twice a day after all!

Well it really doesn't make much of a difference who gets the job... the acceptance of the brexit mythology by all (even Starmer) means that no progress can be made and managed decline is all that can be delivered. Rishi actually identified it in his resignation letter when he spoke about telling the public the truth (about the state of our economy) even the institutions who normally dish out the reality of our ecomomy (BOE, ONS etc) are either playing down the news or it's suppressed by the Tory press, they are worried about the rest of the world realising what a desperate position our economy is in.
This is also masked by full employment and wage increases to counter the cost of living crisis. I am no economist but the fault lines are in plain site. At some point a government is going to have to really piss sections of society off.. Boris functioned as a sort of Liberal and the electorate now expects a range of handouts, tax cuts and inflation level pay/pensions awards.
The debt payments are quietly becoming a material burden - Rishi knows this is unsustainable so he ****ed off (he didn't give a shit about Boris)
There is no sensible way forward economically (without CU/SM membership) ... so that leaves a very limited set of choices for any government regardless of type.

Oldmanmtb I don't think there are any options under any idealogy short of the far lefts lets just print some more money. To some extent weve already done that, the pound has tanked and we're even worse off.
There's only one way out of this and it's rejoining the EU in stages. Even then though we will never get the same standard of deal Thatcher negotiated with the generous rebates etc.
I think austerity is a given, the only bit of schadenfreude is that biggest impact will be on one of the socio economic groups that really supported Brexit. They had a serious decision to make, they choose poorly for bad reasons.
Unfortunately thus group is still holding the country to ransom, Starmer needs the red wall gammons back to have a chance of firming a government do his hands are tied regarding the single market etc.

Yep, I remember when my granny realised that Thatcherism wasn't the conservative 'values' she'd voted for all her life - god knows what she'd think of this lot, but then she grew up on the 30's so would probably see 'parallels'...
