I remember these from years ago...see if you can get them! No googling...
Sea animal (2 words, 5 and 3)
Large Fish (7 letters)
Does anybody have any more?
If you're stuck on seven up, it's 'lemonade.
100 minus one equals 99 (4 letters)

7 across : Overburdened postman

Thousands of em!
Large Fish (7 letters)
It's not enough letters or I was going to say "Marillion."
do you mean 99 minus 1 = 100?
That works but its not how I've heard the clue used (depends what your answer is though). That said it came up in an interview so was stated verbally rather than on the page so he may have inadvertently reversed it.
EDIT Actually no because 'equals 99' is what verifies the answer
It's not enough letters or I was going to say "Marillion."
🙂

Sorry 😳 it's possible I may have seen that before - or if not something very similar as I hit straight on how to solve it.
Is "portion" really the answer to "Large fish" - I'm still failing to get that even with all the clues. Maybe I'm missing the cultural bit.

Large fish. Take away from a chippy.
Special 🙂
Might be a regional thing (Yorkshire)!!!
Very good fish (5)
that's brill
Honestly, I spent weeks on that clue about 10 years ago. Bastard.
Yes, but I don't like to shout about it.

They lead the way in the present transport system (8)
edit edit, how could I have forgotten this:
Amundsen’s forwarding address (4)
brill could also be betta

What dogs do round trees (4)

woof?
Bark!
woof is close but only half way. It's a proper crossword clue with two ways to get the answer, not a quiz type clue.
Edit: Glenn's got it
Another one:
What Barrie imagined the Flying Dutchman was doomed to do (5,5,4)
Never never land?
Gegs and HIJKLMNO are pretty well known clues for their simple brilliance. As soon as I saw the thread title I was expecting it to contain those clues, and if not then I was going to post them.
they are and both simple and clever at the same time

I woudl argue that your answer works very well but it is not correct

God running amok [8]
your clue is its a proper noun so capitalised
Capitalised has a meaning that will make you go DOH when you get it It is a capital [letter] to start to be clear but it has more than one meaning here.
I only got it because i had some letters in it I dont think i would have got it from the clue alone
[quote=Junkyard ]I woudl argue that your answer works very well but it is not correct
It's a bit too straight an answer TBH
Capitalised has a meaning that will make you go DOH when you get it It is a capital [letter] to start to be clear but it has more than one meaning here.
Is the "capitalised" bit part of the original clue then?
no but i dont think it can be got without it[ as i said i had letters] - it [capital] has a double meaning in the sentence work out the other and you will have it... hopefully
Olympian is all I can think of but it doesn't really work
Couldn't remember the good one I had last weekend so while trying remind myself I stumbled across these:
Number of fingers (9)
Bar of soap (6,6)
Flightless bird, found in Iceland (6, 7)
And a couple of minimalist ones:
O (8, 6)
(1, 6, 3, 1, 4)
Edit, just seen the last one has been done but I'll leave it in as I missed it earlier
Flightless bird, found in Iceland (6, 7)
Frozen chicken!
That's the easy one 😉
Bar of soap is quite a good one IMO, its a different meaning for both words and readily accessible to non crossworders. Number of fingers is a bit more lateral, different meaning (sort of) of one word
Bar of soap (6,6)
I'm thinking that Bar is a bar you'd find in the pub...but I can't quite make anything fit at the moment!
Digitally?Number of fingers (9)
