[Closed] Should new forum users wear L plates?

[#1073879]

It can be a bit rough and tumble on here but if you stick around you get used to it.

Perhaps new users get put off when they get a sharp reply to their threads. Could new forum users have a visual "L plate" for the first couple of months so that they get treated gently?

They could put an "L" go in their display name until they get used to us.

Comments?

Brilliant idea in my opinion. ๐Ÿ˜€

Loads of forums have ranks, based on number of posting, but all that really matter is "are the new?" and a simple L-plate would be a great way to do that.

The "I'm a newbie" post normally gets the rabid pack dogs slathering, perhaps not having paper thin skin, and not acting like you actually give a toss would be better advice...

Do they even look at posts before coming on here..?

Easy.. just make the Chat forum (where most of the bollocks is spouted) off limited until 10 posts in or 1 month.

I always thought it was surprising mature on here compared to the other forums, maybe it just shows how immature I am........

And TJ - at last we have something we have in common.

I'd suggest instigating post counts but it'd only lead to more ranting.....

it's very mild here compared to other forums though, L plates would just single people out for bullying

Well, I once asked if girlie singlespeeders could have priority (ie ladies first) on the singletrack.

It didn't go down terribly well ... but I failed to mention I would be wearing my Kylie shorts ๐Ÿ˜‰

"L plates would just single people out for bullying"

I though about that: We don't bully learner drivers do we? If there was a consensus to treat L posters gently, then it would be our duty to rough-up anyone bullying them.

This forum is largely free of the boring flame-wars you get on others. Better calibre of people on here IMO.

"If there was a consensus to treat L posters gently, then it would be our duty to rough-up anyone bullying them."

but what if the bully had L plates? It could get messy.

why should anyone need treated gently? treat everyone consistently and if you're a c0ck it will soon become clear to them. I can't think of anything worse than people "being gentle" on me on a new forum then reverting back to complete c**t mode after a few days.

reverting back to complete c**t mode after a few days.

and yes there are lots on here who are consistent, because they are stuck in above mode all the time.

though about that: We don't bully learner drivers do we?

we're not driving though, we are on the internet where people can be anonymous and be as nasty as they want without comeback

As a newbie myself I would add that there are occasions where it can be intimidating joining a new forum.

I find this is particualrly true when there is a plethora of erudite posters , sharp wit, (as opposed to mindless abuse), and barbed sarcasm that both tickles the ribs whilst cutting to the quick

Suffice to say I have felt entirely relaxed on this foum

My suggestion would be blue badges for the 'veterans' on here.

I think there's an insult buried in there but as it's not mindless abuse I'm struggling to understand it.

Purple hearts could indicate some act of heroism.
A blue badge just means you've been on here long enough to be miserable and that your posts are tinged with a subtle senality.

There are some who like to savour the thought that the forum they frequent is the most unwelcoming, witty, sarcastic, all knowing forum ever and you have to be so very mentally tough to survive in the realms of frequent posters.
In truth, this place is like most other internet forums. Plenty banter, individuals sharing a common interest, a couple of users who like to think that they are the forum as they spend most of their time trying to be more sarcastic than anyone else and they end up with a small group of hangers-on who post up 'where is ******' if they don't post for a couple of days. Oh, and then they go and change their user name and their merry band gleefully let the rest of the community know that they've figured it out.
It's all very entertaining if not a little sad. ๐Ÿ˜€
Can't say I've ever found this place that intimidating. Yes, there are always those who seem to take delight in ripping in to newbies but if that's their way then it's up to the rest of us to offset that with reasonable behavior and not follow on blindly.
I like it on here and hope that others that reg. will also get the chance to benefit from it as I have. As for giving them an 'L' so as the bully boys give them a bit breathing space and concentrate their efforts on those that put up with their carp in the first instance......
