[#10267554]

got a severe sharp pain in my elbow. when I try to grasp something and lift it is too painful to do so. when trying to do this with my arm extended is impossible.

pain is on the knobbly bit, not right on the point of the elbow.

any idea's?

Not sure what you mean by the knobbly bit.

Epicondyle probably means some kind of tennis elbow-style inflammation, but there's a few things it could be. Does it hurt equally when you lift it palm up and palm down, or when you're turning the palm over eg tipping out a saucepan?

The advice is usually the same - ice it, rest it.

it hurts like hell when I lift something, and yes, whilst tipping something out, like the kettle.

thing is, I have not knocked or banged it.

rice it is then.

Do you do any repetitive activities (steady...) which includes forearm motion (ahem)?

It could be tendonitis. I picked it up from poor technique drumming and work (typing, mouse use etc) exacerbated it.

Tennis elbow. Lots of things cause it, not just tennis.  Should settle with RICE if you use the other hand for a while.

Good luck. After a year or so of various solutions I had the steroid injection. A couple of weeks later the pain had gone and it's not returned in the past 15 or more years.

too much time using the mouse. Raise or lower your chair a bit.

That will be it. I first annoyed mine by rock climbing, then aggravated it playing Team Fortress 2 all day one weekend. 🙂

If it's an acute flare-up then RICE and, to a lesser extent, ibuprofen should help a bit. If it grumbles on for more than a couple of weeks then those things won't work, and I can recommend a sports physio in Yeadon who specialises in climbing injuries and sorted mine with massage, stretching and strengthening exercises.

I found switching a mouse for a trackpad really helped. I was given a trackball first but found that exacerbated it.

Might be worth a look?

I've had this for a few months - really hard to pick a pint up!

Feels like a bashed the bone (phnar phnar) but I haven't.

Interestingly though it's my left hand, and I'm right handed...must go and see a quack about it.

I had something similar (but not quite so extreme) a couple of years ago - I traced it to the way I was putting my laptop into its carry bag (squeeze + twist). I found an elbow support was really helpful (as well as changing how I handled my laptop):

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bracoo-Reversible-Stabiliser-Adjustable-Neoprene/dp/B005BIG6JU/ref=sr_1_5_s_it?s=drugstore&ie=UTF8&qid=1539296208&sr=1-5&keywords=elbow+support

I had tennis elbow and I couldn't open a packet of crisps without pain while gripping opposite sides of the bag and pulling

The other common one is golfers' elbow. Go online, a couple of stretches in particular directions will identify which it's likely to be. RICE might sort it, physio, steroid jab, operation in ascending order

I've had golfer's and tennis elbow (why can't they be called shark wrestlers elbow or something) and generally pain above the elbow is tennis and underneath is golfer.  I use a support like this one:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/2-Pack-Tennis-Compression-PlayActive-Sports/dp/B015I2EC9O/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1539326164&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=tennis+elbow+strap&psc=1

and do these exercises:

https://www.healthline.com/health/fitness-exercise/tennis-elbow-rehab

It can be caused by a myriad of reasons, I did mine lifting buckets of cement.

With me, I solved a long standing problem with Tennis Elbow by fitting a wider handlebar to my mountain bike. The pain cleared up within a few weeks and I haven't had any problems for a good few years now.....touch wood....touch wood.

I think might have been the problem in the first place.

Go see a medical professional it may be something more serious, if not one arm negative pull ups.
