[#10251160]

We're in need of a 2.5m curtain pole (having just bought some new curtains and finding out that the current pole is entirely ussless as it's an extending jobbie and the curtains won't pass the extension point).

I've potentially found a couple on gumtree but I'm not sure on how I can transport one without a van.

We have a volvo s40 with roofbars but I'm not sure how I could secure a 35mm pole to the roofbars in a safe way. Alternately I could have it hanging out the boot but I'm not keen on this (is this even legal?).

Ideas?

Drop the back seats and feed it in through the passengers window.

Then go road sign jousting 😉

I have a couple of of these  ratchet straps already, I'm not sure I'd trust these alone in strapping it down though, would it not just fly out forward/backwards at the first opportunity and spear someone/something?

Long zip ties will do the job easiest.

Arm out the window, take it steady? Belt and braces, get a person to do the same in the rear seat.

S40 is a decent sized car, surely you can fit it inside? have you got a ski hatch to fit it through then into the front passenger side?

Also, if it's a wooden pole it may well be two halfs that screw together.

A rubber glove under a strap will help hold it secure to the pole.

With rachet straps like that probably.  I use small straps like you get on old school bike pedals (or some bike racks) for kayak paddles.  They obviously have something on the ends to stop them sliding out but I’ve never seen any movement.  If you could get some pipelagging or similar material around your pole it would probably grip well under the strap.   If you were really concerned you could feed a rope through the centre of the pole (I assume they are tubes) and tie the ends to the rack as well.

Cut it in half.  Learn to weld.  Then weld the thing back together.

How hard can welding be anyway..

Should go inside,  put a glove over the end of you are worried about it scratching the dashboard.

To stop it sliding back or forward, put a bag over each end and tie the bag to to the roof bar.

Just lash it on as Matt says, it will take a couple of minutes.

You are way over thinking it. Just strap it on, then strap it down.

Try across-ways for maximum comedic effect.

Seriously,  strapped down tight it will be fine. I have never lost a kayak paddle, and the have "sails" on each  end.

Are you sure it won't fit inside the car? I've got a MK2 focus and can fit 2.4m lengths of wood inside with the boot and windows closed.

That would be drilling a hole in the roof and having a middle seat passenger hold it upright like a ship's mast.

Friend and second car.

Each car has passenger hold one end of pole. Drive close behind.

Secureing a pole to roof bars

This is Brexit at it’s worst.

They should be allowed to sit inside the car like British people

I'm not sure how much you're paying on GT but a new pole delivered should cost about 50-60 at most with minimal hassle.

In likelihood a 2.4m wooden pole will be 2 sections with a thread in the centre any how though so will probably transport just fine in your car.
