In Dundee is it not "sling in an ingin an' aw", if you'll pardon my phonetics. For those of you south of the Wall it translates as "could you put a pickled onion in with my pie supper please".
I believe the original refers to an onion bridie, i.e two plain bridies and an onion one as well.

as in "gie's a planeane ananinginaneana" (1 plain, 1 onion)
Birdies? I never realised that's where it came from. I was told the phrase by a Dundonian pal. I assumed he was authentic because he was ginger. I shall now have to point out his error to him. (-:
I'm off now to listen to a Michael Marra album.
fwiw - in scotland, they're called [s]dundee [/s]pies
Our local butchers pie business - taylors pies Darlington do a thing called Burger bake I think they would be illegal outside the North.
Taylors are like Greggs evil twin...
Much as I enjoy a Bains pie it ain't a proper Scotch pie, it's got real meat and gravy in it:-)

Asked what that is in local bakery down here in s.e. Kent. Scotch pie was answer. Bought. Ate. Didn't like. Pastry encasing some mid-grey lump of something that presumably was once lamb and pepper.

If you're lucky, best not to know what's in them.
Lamb has no place in a scotch pie.
The closest thing to a meat pie from cut my own throat dibbler
Mutton not lamb
Never had better than those from Penmans in Crail, tho Murrays in Perth come close.
