If I plus an external hard drive into my router could I listen to themusic through my sonos and control it with my phone?

Probably. As long as the router shows your HDD as a NAS drive.

Should be able to, just add it's location to the sonos library.
Safest to check it before buying a drive, if you have a USB stick just give it a go.

http://forums.sonos.com is a good Sonos resource.
Another option if you have under 20,000 tracks and a decent connection is to upload to Google Play and stream this to your Sonos.
