RIP Arnie - the king

Still go back to his book on how to play golf. So simple and effective

Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson etc may have a claim to that title but he was certainly a big star.

The mega bucks came after Arnie and McCormack - and the real global superstar status IMO

Spent many an hour playing Arnold Palmer's Pro Shot Golf when young.

Luckily it stopped me ever wasting my life on the real thing ๐Ÿ™‚

Yep, a legend in the true sense of the word. Before my time, but huge respect for him in the game, as he was the one that took it up a few levels in the public eye.

As you phrased it as a question I'd go for Gaius Appuleius Diocles as the first sporting superstar.

RIP to one of the all time greats thats for sure. A real role model.

He was probably the first superstar to understand the commercial value of his success and in that way transform sport

He was a dream ticket at that time. Charismatic, amazingly talented and human. RIP.

My nomination for the first all-conquering mega star is this guy, though.

Average of 99.94 on uncovered pitches and an international career of 20+ years - WTF!
