I just heard this too. He was the first football super star i remember. At school watching the 1982 world cup and he was injured but came on and nearly won the game - a real game changer of a player with a huge aura.
Twice European Player of the Year.
Mad as a box of frogs as a manger but equally as charismatic and when he got it right his teams were spectacular to watch - massive entertainment.
England team had a camp at Keele uni when I was there, a mate was doing portering for them over that summer and said he was a super nice guy.
I've plenty reasons not to like Kevin Keegan. I'm Scottish for a start. I moved to Middlesborough in 1980 I became a Middlesborough fan at the height of Keegan mania on Tyneside. There was absolutely no better place to watch football in England in those days than St James Park. Even for a Middlesborough fan due in no small part to Kevin Keegan Fast forward to the end of the game what an atmosphere

I was too young to see him play for Liverpool but remember VHS of lots of highlights- what a player.
I watched his Newcastle team play Grimsby Town away in one of their last games before promotion to the Premier League. The whole town was in black and white stripes and the atmosphere at Blundell Park was amazing. I was standing behind the goal at the Grimsby end with mates. At some point in the game Andy Cole was fouled and Keegan got up off the bench screaming his head off. A mate behind me immediately started a chant of “Sit down Keegan, sit down Keegan” and half the stadium joined in. It was epic.
Came across as a decent guy who always gave 100%.
Who can remember Keegan on the BBC's Superstars, total commitment.
Damn I had a doona set back in the day with Kev on. Must have been mid 80s. That curly mop. Sad day!

I listened to part of a BBC interview from a couple of years ago.
Definitely not a privileged upbringing; his family home had gas but not electricity. His mum had to give birth at his aunt's house because you weren't allowed to be born in a house without.
He was turned down as a boy by a couple of clubs before Bill Shankly snapped him up for Liverpool. Agents weren't a thing then.
