I would go for the D60 over the 40.

I have a Sony A200. It works. It'll do far more than I'm likely to ever use. It'll do for me. Price about £250 these days, if still available

Nikon d5000 here, twin lens kit was £650 but single lens kit cheaper, its an amazing camera

The canon Ebay outlet are selling refurbed EOS450d with the kit lens. They seem to go for under £330. Come with a years manufacturers warranty.

Just acquired one myself - not at a point where I could say it is good, bad or indifferent yet, though having fun playing with it.

Another happy Sony A200 user - but then I also have a stock of old Minolta lenses, so that just made economic sense.
