She likes to sit high up as she has problems with her feet (old injuries). Currently has a 2000 RAV 4 but it's expensive to run and getting a bit long in the tooth.
She does the school run mainly, shopping. Less than 10k miles per. year.
She doesn't need a 4x4 but that type of car does elevate her driving position so may be tied into something like this.
Budget about £7000.
Kuga? Qashqai? Any other thoughts?
Datsun Juke......... I'll get my coat
SWMBO had a Skoda Yeti. She now bemoans the loss of it for the very reason you mention.
She consistently says it is the best car she has ever had and I have bought her a few nice ones over the years.
I quite liked it too. Drove well, was quiet and comfortable enough.
Not sure I could live with that on the drive.
Looks like a motorised toad!!
Citroen C3 Picasso.
90hp diesel is quite nippy and most are £30 RFL (but check first as some older ones just miss out on the tax band).
Interior is massive for the overall size of car - always amazes her work colleagues (Audi and Mondeo estate owners) when they travel in it.
Mrs has done 40,000 in hers and loves it. Had a Nemo Multispace for a short time before that and it wasn't a patch - slow and crude.
Yeti is too expensive. They hold their value really well.
Kia Sportage doesn't look anything like a toad (and would be my suggestion)
However, I would also have recommended the Yeti as a very nicely thought out and equally nicely executed bit of kit, so you may not agree with me!
I like the Yeti but 2nd hand can't be bought for less than £10k.
It's the Juke that looks like a toad!!
Kia Venga. Good upright position in an otherwise fairly compact car and no pretendy 4x4 styling.
My Megane Scenic has a fairly upright position, certainly compared to the Focus we had before.
Edit: I meant "high" rather than "upright".
Berlingo?
*runs and hides*
Fiat Doblo........no running or hiding here as that's what I roll 😀
Hyundai ix35? Had one for nearly 3 years, decent emissions, decent efficiency, loads of kit for the cash and drives reasonably well! I say reasonably, I do still miss the beemer occasionally!
Had a Nissan Note as a hire car for 5 days and thought it was a great car. I'm 6'5" and tree was plenty of room behind me, I did about 150 odd miles and averaged at 45mpg for mainly around town and some motorway miles.
+1 berlingo.
I feel like I am in a monster truck next to most cars at the lights.
If you care about what your car looks like then it's probably not for you though
Mrs Pondo has a pre-facelift Fiat Panda, pennies to run, great round town, easy to park, takes us and two bikes camping to France, and it's very tall for the size. Payoff is it's a bit rolly but if you don'treat it like a go kart, you won't be disappointed.
Focus Cmax. Very easy to get in and out of. Nice and high. Not a 4x4.
My wife likes upright and highish also. Her last 3 cars have been Scenic, CMax and now a Kia Soul. She likes the Kia best and I tend to agree.
We have a golf plus 1.9TD that we are thinking of selling if you are interested.
My wife also likes to ride tall in a car due to back problems - but an increasing family means another estate!
Panda trekking: almost as high as my yeti but half the cost and only 2wd?
I had a Cmax and loved it.
I now own a Dacia Duster. Perfect for your needs.
Duster seconded. Been getting 45mpg from my 4x4 diesel on a mix of short and longer runs. SWMBO is a short-arse and loves the driving position too
Previous generation Mercedes A Class ? - I ran an A170 diesel for 12 years / 100k miles and had absolutely no problems with it - very good on its tyres, two sets of brake pads/ shoes and a pair of discs, two air-con regases, one exhaust back box, two batteries . . . and nothing else, save for routine oil and filter changes. 55mpg.
Anything 4x4 style - the 2wd variant would be cheaper and more efficient
You would get a very very nice restored Dolomite Sprint for that money and IMHO had one of the best driving positions, eva!
4 door, pretty good boot size, cracking engine ( literally ), although a restored one will have the thicker copper head gasket, 4 speed box with overdrive on 3rd and 4th... Cue nostalgic sigh...
Nice dashboard too. Just don't expect too much when going round corners in the wet 😀
Kia Soul - I love them anyway.
a golf plus
+1 Not the cheapest of options though not as bad a normal golf's, and a petrol would probably suit the mileage, so even less sought-after (popular). It has a great seating position, a tall base (adjustable) and loads of head room. My partner does car work place assessments, and loves my golf plus's seat and constantly berates new cars
