Outstanding:

The police were looking into it. The fact that after three months' investigation they decided to bring the Hamiltons in - you make your own conclusions.

would tend to suggest that the police believe there is something in all this because they have been working on it for a few months

So you know, you make up your own minds and the public will. All I would say is that when it comes to judging who's telling the truth I totally believe what the young lady told me. The police obviously believe there is something in it they wouldn't have spent all this time investigating.

Max Clifford, 2001

Max Clifford is a bit of a scumbag, true, but in the spirit of fairness, the whole Hamiltons affair just shows that people can be arrested for things when - in time and in retrospect - it turns out that there is no credible evidence of any wrongdoing. It's also worth remembering that Clifford was a significant figure in the phone hacking scandal and had his phone hacked by members of the police-PI-media milieu).

(And, before we start feeling too sorry for the Hamiltons - he was completely corrupt in taking kickbacks from oil companies in return for political influence, so eff him and his wife).

Hate to raise the issue of justice now that all mentioned here have been judged and found wanting, but just in case no one noticed the last chap to be so positivily identified as a "person of interest" is now sitting on a six figure sum. It would be perhaps one of the reasons our great land has gone to the dogs, because we now ascribe the justice of the pub to everyone - people in glass houses an all that. But hey! Im ok theyll never find out its me, will they?

That's not accurate.

McAlpine was accused by journalists of being a paedophile, which is not true; it was never suggested he was a person of interest to a police inquiry. Clifford has been arrested in connection with alleged sex offences, which is true (it is true that he was arrested, it is true that allegations of sex offences have been made).
