Need some feline pictures as I've just been told that my beloved cat Mel was put to sleep this afternoon ๐Ÿ˜ฅ

[img]2005_0825Image0030 by Da_Milky_Bar_Kid, on Flickr[/img]

She was 17 years old we think and we've had her since she was about 2 as a rescue cat with her sister Pip who we lost two years ago. We got them when I was 20 and still living at my parent's house so they both lived there as cats and rentals don't mix, plus they had fields and a stream to explore.

Mel had been suffering with her hips for the last 3 years but just refused to give in, jumping around and chasing my mum's dog around like nothing was wrong but sadly the vet found lumps after she had lost a lot of weight so the tough decision was taken today by my dad. She will be the last cat we have as a family as my dad is 78 so doesn't want any more pets as he hates the idea of them outlasting him! So it's the end of an era, no more cats. Well, until I get my own place that is.

Tonight's night shift is going to be a little tough I think.

Sadly Vega, bottom one in bottom pic and one facing away in top pic, is no longer with us. Other 3 still going strong.

Sorry to hear that OP. We recently lost our cat, Marmite a few weeks ago. He was 20 years old and was very pampered.

Not strictly just a cat... but he used to sit like a human on my side of the bed, the OH took the opportunity to snap this. Her favourite picture of him. [img] [/img]

Our 2 couldn't have more different personalities -
grey one, constantly looking for food, doesn't like being picked up.
white one, not a brain cell in his head, wags his tail at you like a dog and flops in your arms if you pick him up

Really sorry to hear about Mel, Milky. Sounds like my longest serving cat Captain Cosmic. She was 18 and had spent a lot of that at the rentals after I buggered off to uni

Here's our two. My Facebook memories tell me its 6 years to the day since we got this one, Che...

[img] [/img]

He usually adopts this position in the place most likely to trip you up

And heres Nelson, his younger brother, who just spends his life like this on our bed.....

[img] [/img]

He was a rescue cat, who was found feral, but is now the softest creature you'll ever meet. If you just walk into the room he instantly starts purring

As you can see, they both lead very stressful lives

I love cats well some but that poor Timmy is ugly, but I bet he's a cracker though
I had a Siamese years ago and used to waken up in the winter with her next to me she would sneak under the duvet for a heat and then a Burmese male who could open closed doors but never ever managed to shut them

This is Masha. A feral cat found living on the haystack in the shed. She was so shy it took about 4 months of quiet talking to her before I could get within 10 feet of her. Eventually I managed to creep up on her and she didn't run away. Next time I took her some milk and she followed me into the house and that was it. She barely went outside for the next 6 months ๐Ÿ™‚

To much of a pita to post pics on this forum to show mine. Perhaps you could persuade your dad to rescue a senior cat? They are always the hardest to get adopted.

It's never easy. Every time I say "that's it, I don't want anymore pets only to lose them" but the joy always outweighs the pain.

Here's the current nut bag;

Lovely pictures, really cheered me up seeing all those characters although wallop and mrwhyte win a special mention for making me laugh ๐Ÿ˜†

Thinking back we were very lucky to get Mel on the rehoming day as she was very popular, had a bit of a list for the carers to work through! We 'won' as we could take her and her sister together, they didn't want to separate them as they had both been through a traumatic time being in a house with a dog that used them as soft toys. Mel was always scared of any sudden movements but otherwise was lovely, everyone said she was stunning. She even put up with my mum getting a dog who Mel has trained to the point he thinks he's a cat ๐Ÿ˜ฏ The pair of them were our first moggies after having had pure colorpoints all my life so we were not used to cats living more than 8-10 years.

Perhaps you could persuade your dad to rescue a senior cat? They are always the hardest to get adopted.

We've already suggested this but he dismissed it out of hand. We'll try again in a few weeks time when he starts to pine for a cat again, he usually lasts 6 weeks tops.

You know most rescues would probably be delighted if you call it "fostering" and agree that the cat goes back if and when it's necessary.

Cats really don't care BTW. They like humans in general, not specific people. And they easily adapt to a new territory in a fairly short time.
