I made a small charitable donation online this morning using PayPal and was surprised when the payment went through without me needing to log onto my account (and therefore, in my view, without actually authorising it). I posted about this here then decided that advertising a possibly compromised PayPal account on a public internet forum was perhaps not a great idea.
After lots of digging around in my account settings and the PayPal help system it turns out that this is by design (although I suspect fairly new) and that payments of £30 or less from 'trusted' devices are paid by PayPal without requiring a login!
The problem seems to be that I've never selected any of my devices as trusted and PayPal seems to have decided for itself that every device I've authorised a PayPal payment from (my desktop, 2 tablets and my phone) are to be trusted. I've removed them but have no idea if PayPal with decide to trust them again! I'm also not convinced that a dodgy website could spoof a sub-£30 payment hoping that it'll go through as coming from a trusted device, so I might keep an eye on this.

I was hoping to ignore this earlier but got caught up cooking tea (veggie sausage pasta bake - was delicious actually. Added a bit of stock and some sun-dried toms which really gave it some depth). Anyway, I’m done now, just relaxing on the sofa eating fudge (that’s not meant to be a euphemism) so can start ignoring this now. Hope that’s ok - and apologies for the tardiness.
