Maybe some of the Docs/Medicals in the house can answer this for me:

I'm planning a bit of an epic 6 day trip in the wilds of north america at the end of the summer. I'm currently working on improving a back injury that has plagued me for a few years now, it's getting there but occasionally it strikes again and when it does I'm generally in debilitating agony for a few days - so much so that just moving from my bed is virtually impossible, let alone paddling a canoe through back waters 500 miles from help. I'd like to take some pretty strong painkillers, even if just a weeks worth, to at least let me get out of the situation and get on to the second half of my holiday which will be somewhat more relaxed and less self-reliant.

Anyone know what the chances are of going to the GP and asking for some "in case" without looking like a druggie and being refused?

Ooh and I guess I need to know if the US will have a fit with me putting it through in the hold luggage too.

My GP gave me some dihydrocodine on a similar basis. You can but try. Its not unreasonable to ask for a few.

So long as you have a prescription for them and not too many you should be OK I guess but that the embassy should be able to tell you.

Rule of thumb: When you go abroad, take the medicines you will need, no more, no less.
