It is not a queue

Of course it isn't, you idiot! It's a zebra riding a giraffe! Surely you can see that!

It is a queue! One zebra is riding a giraffe and the others are waiting their turn! Hence, a queue.

Shows what you know, that zebra is a knight and the giraffe its stallion. They're about to charge into battle against the oppressive lions. They'll charge and they'll charge hard.

I beg to differ, that is definitely a queue of zebras.

If people are overtaking him while he's waiting to overtake someone else why is he not overtaking when there is clearly an overtaking gap in which to do his overtaking? 😉

Is it possible to have multidirectional multispinning zebra?

Get some more training if you're having trouble with indicating your intent to overtake.

I've got no problem, why do you think it's a problem with me signalling, rather than a problem with the other road user ignoring my signals?

You'd rather place me at fault, because it helps you feel like you've won something - is that it?

For the 100th time, what I object to is people taking my turn away from me WHEN I AM INTENDING TO OVERTAKE MYSELF. Clearly they are not giving me reasonable chance to overtake, otherwise I would.

Molgrips, with all due respect, you appear to be seeing some people's disagreement as incomprehension. Having waded through 12 pages here, I don't think that's always the case.

One thing others have said that I'd contest: overtaking has very little to do with vehicle performance. It's about forward planning, observation, reading the road, gearing, and road positioning. If you're waiting until the point where you can overtake to start thinking about passing (and I'm not saying you are, I said "if"), then it's too late.

I've done a good amount of driving over the years. I've had my share of sitting in lines of traffic, overtaking, and being overtaken. And I can hand on heart say that the situation you describe has almost never happened to me. It has occasionally, but it's rare IME. So either, the conditions you're driving in differ from mine (geography?), or we're doing something differently in our driving. Sure, you get the odd nobber, and I've seen some crazy manoeuvres, but getting boxed in by overtaking drivers "queue-jumping" when I wanted to overtake? Almost never happens.

And if it did, they'll be past in a second if they're giving it beans (which they almost certainly are or they wouldn't be a problem in the first place), in which case there's every chance you can follow them anyway and complete your manoeuvre.

In all seriousness, it sounds like you'd benefit from advanced training. I mean no disrespect / condescension with that comment, I'm giving it serious consideration myself. We can always learn something new.

If you're going to overtake someone set yourself up with a wee gap between yourself and them. That way you've got an acceleration gap where you dont need to be on the other side of the road and you dont get knobbers.....

It's been covered, glupton.

You get knobbers overtaking you in tiny gaps and pulling into the space you leave for passing/stopping, sometimes preventing from you going at the next chance.

Molgrips, with all due respect, you appear to be seeing some people's disagreement as incomprehension.

We all think that queue jumping is ok if you're sure no-one else is going to pass. However, every single time I get to a long queue of traffic behind a slow moving vehicle, there's always at least one car jumping the queue at every chance, often dangerously. This pisses me off.

I'm usually in Mid Wales or the Marches, if that makes a difference. Overtaking spots can be very hard to come by.

If people are overtaking him while he's waiting to overtake someone else why is he not overtaking when there is clearly an overtaking gap in which to do his overtaking?

Cos a lot of people think it's ok to pass when you can't see what's coming, or if there is something coming on the basis that they'll brake for you.

Interesting. This is the opposite to what I was taught on my response driving courses, which was get out onto the 'wrong' side without accelerating, have an even better look around whilst still able to pull back in if necessary, then if its on just boot it past.

That was how I came the closest I ever came to being killed. A long time ago now, there was a long straight that I knew was coming up on a road I knew very well, and a lorry in front of me. As I went round the final slight right hander I could see all down the road. So I started to move out to get a view all the way down the road, but there was a car being obscured by the lorry. As it happened, I hadn't really even crossed the white line, but it's very scary to think 'right, I can go here' and then suddenly there's a car right in front of you that you had no idea was there.

I learned something that day.

Glupton...you're trying to apply sense & reason...something some of us spent most of the day trying to do without success.
Agree with your comment regarding a gap, particularly applicable with lower power vehicles, but less appropriate when you've a bit more horsepower & torque.

I'd contest the first part of that. Vehicle performance greatly adds to the other parts you mention for safe, successful overtaking.
Obvious physics innit.

What I mean is,

Sure, it's easier in a faster car (and easier to make a rash mistake due to overconfidence, arguably), but having a slower car shouldn't be a showstopper, within reason anyway. If you're trying to overtake whilst driving a tractor, then that's probably going to be challenging.

Putting that another way, having a fast car can compensate for being crap at overtaking.

Clearly it wasn't road positioning, planning, observation or how to execute an effective overtake.
