I was wearing my favourite old Ramones t-shirt the other day..I’m 47
So four years old in their heyday? No biggie, you're as entitled to wear it as Paris^^
47 and a bit fat here – i seem to live in Gap cammo shorts and a collection of scruffy T-shirts at the moment.
My wife and I had a discussion on this a couple of days ago – she asked me if i thought she had a particular ‘style’ which she generally dresses to..
She doesn’t, but she reckons i’m ‘country chic’ with a wardrobe full of flannel shirts, faded jeans, T-shirts, etc.
“Country chic” ? So Mumford And Sons?
Why do men of a certain age wear cammo shorts? Is it to hide from predators?
No man over 50 should ever be seen outdoors in a leather jacket,Jeans, trainers(unless running)or silly tee shirts
Don't agree with this. I think its great when you see old bikers, skins, punks etc still showing a bit of love for their roots and identity. They are living their own life and enjoying it. Sticking on a smart suit shows a strange mix of vanity and lack of imagination.
wear cammo shorts?
it's for when they are playing Airsoft
Holy moly… “cool” = “Hipster” I guess
The clue is in the fact that hip and cool are basically the same word DezB. 😉
I'm not saying I would go all out hipster like them but it's nice to see older people looking dapper I think. Why not?
Controversial opinion here but I never gave a **** about trendy clothes until I somehow ended up with a gorgeous, usually very well well turned out partner. No pressure at all from her but I like not feeling like a slobby scruff by comparison.
Edit: not that I'm exactly saying all you 'i wear novelty t shirts and shorts every day' people have ugly wives but.... you know....
Why do men of a certain age wear cammo shorts?
I know! And when they're so hard to find...
@trailwagger are you sure that link is correct? Takes me to a non clothes related site.
Don't get the hate for skinny jeans. What's the alternative? Nasty bootcuts? Flares? It's not 2003/1970.
Yeah, the 'sprayed-on' ones are a bit much but I like them close round the ankle.
Think he meant thread.com
I found their recommendations quite good but I never actually bought anything from them.
I like tapered jeans not baggy round the ankles but it's very rare that anyone (male) manages to pull off the real super skinny jeans look imo. Chubby people should think again! Lots of decent non skinny options from Edwin and Carhartt etc

A smart suit wouldn't be too bad, it's when they go all Clarkson that you know they've given up.
beige slacks and m&s knitwear
First signs that you have given up on life.

Wow, you sound like a bundle of fun to go shopping with.

I know the feeling and since I started taking more of an interest in how I look, shopping trips are much more pleasurable and usually end up in a bar for much needed refreshments.
Perhaps you dont care how other people feel when they have to look at you in the street.Charity shop bargain bin explosion is not a pretty site.
Not sure about the hatred for ties and cravats*. They keep your neck warm in winter better than those bulky scarfs
"It's cold out... best put a tie on" said no-one in the history of ever.
What was your (*)?
Ramones t-shirts are usually worn by people who don’t even know who the Ramones are. Best avoided really!
Random slogans aren't really a new thing. For years you've seen people walking about with tee-shirts emblazoned with stuff like "I❤NY" or "Big Mike's Long Island Surf Shack" when the closest the wearer has been to Big Mike's was a weekend in Anglesea.
Don’t get the hate for skinny jeans.
I actually liked the idea and thought I might be able to carry it off until I tried a pair on and it looked like I'd just escaped from a concentration camp.
Perhaps you dont care how other people feel when they have to look at you in the street.
Correct.
Couldn't give a toss about the opinion of a complete stranger whom I'm going to encounter for five seconds and then never see again in my life. Absolutely zero ****s given, with a spring in my step and joy in my heart. I would be hard pressed to think of something I worry less about than the risk of committing the sartorial faux pas of failing to have the bottom button of my waistcoat fashionably unbuttoned whilst visiting the chip shop.
I dress for me, in a manner that makes me feel comfortable. Sometimes I may dress in a manner that my partner may find appealing (quiet at the back). Everyone else can stop being judgemental and get over themselves. In fact I actually quite like being underestimated, it's served me well over the years.
Besides. I live in a deprived East Lancashire former mill town, you're more likely to see someone in a friesian-patterned onesie than a sharp business suit. If I went to ASDA in a tweed three-piece with a cravat and a trilby because I cared what people thought, I can tell you exactly what people will think and it won't be what you think it is.
Charity shop bargain bin explosion is not a pretty site.
Because of course, those are the only two options available. Eddie Redmayne or Stig of the Dump.
I've had people telling me I'm too old for air jordan 1's.
They were released in 1983 FFS!
There is only one true way

Yep, don't GAF and never will! Also pretty sure no one GAF about how I or anyone else dresses in the street.
I think its great sad when you see old bikers, skins, punks etc still showing a bit of love for their roots and identity
😆
Yep, don’t GAF and never will!
There's two ways of looking at that. Could be seen as a positive thing, however...
I used to think I didn't GAF, but actually it was just a kind of lack of self-esteem meaning I didn't see the point in trying to look good.
Cougar at al have a lovely attitude towards other people.I,m sensing destructive neurotic personality type.Grum points the way to their problem.

If I wore the same shoes as I did when I was three I'd expect people to tell me I was too old for them.

Or maybe I think people are more than skin deep?
If you define yourself and others by the clothes they wear rather than their actions, beliefs and opinions, then fine knock yourself out; but personally I think you're probably missing something.
Cougar at al have a lovely attitude towards other people.I,m sensing destructive neurotic personality type.
I prefer "higher functioning sociopath."
I don't care what random strangers think about my clothing, you're talking about cravats in 2020 when you're presumably not on your way to a wedding, and I'm the one who's neurotic? Yeah, OK.
I wasn't saying my experience is necessarily universal, but I'm sure it applies in many cases.
I'm far from a fashionista but when I wear good quality clothes that fit me well, that are ethically/locally produced, that have been designed well...
I feel better, I carry myself differently, I feel more confident. This kind of thing definitely is consciously or unconsciously noticed by other people, and they respond better to me, smile more, women flirt with you more ( 🙂 ), etc etc
I'm someone who often struggles with mood/confidence/motivation and looking smart when I go out can really help. In contrast, if I'm letting my beard grow out and slobbing about in 'comfies' all the time it really doesn't help.
Or maybe I think people are more than skin deep?
If you define yourself and others by the clothes they wear rather than their actions, beliefs and opinions,
Do I need to post that picture of Trump again?
How you present yourself to the world is part of who you are and clothes are part of that. We're social creatures and clothes are part of visual communication. So if someone performs admirable actions, has laudable beliefs and opinions worth listening to but is a bit Boden or unfortunately Fat of Face, well that's a thing about them too.
Old bloke who delivers daily Amazon parcels next door made me smile - scruffy as hell but had a Never Mind the Bollocks t-shirt on today 🙂
Completely agree Grum, wearing nice clothes makes me feel good, that’s all that matters
Clothes maketh the man.
I still don't understand why Cougar and footflaps think it's acceptable to be seen in public with the Sartorial elegance of a 12 year old.Do you not want to set a good example to the youth of the district? This country needs to smarten up.
this is a great thread.
i’ve just noticed that the OP wants to wear in public the clothes that he wears to jive but is worried that they may be too trendy. Jive? the dance from over half a century ago? Just to put your mind at rest, you will not look too trendy.
Camo shorts? i think their popularity with folk in their late 40’s is something to do with their unconscious mind acknowledging that they no longer stand out in society, perhaps even invisible to those younger than themselves.
someone up there asked for photos showing my iconoclastic approach to fashion. i have to admit that i may have exaggerated my dress sense.
Its an attitude thing, old enough not to care about being too old (48 years young) 😊
i say, wear the bloody hell you like. life is too short and precious to fanny about worrying what others think. if wearing an amazing vera wang outfit with a tiara and doc martens does it for you and makes YOU happy, sod it, step with confidence and have a great day. If wearing a pretty standard societal uniform for age rocks you boat, that is equally awesome.
Humans are amazing, diverse, wonderful, creative things at their best and life should be celebrated for all its mad cammo-shorted cravat wearing joyfulness.
No one has any control of life and it can throw an utter spanner in the works at any time, so stop worrying about how others percieve you and enjoy being you. we are all a long time dead.
But not in my presence. I don't wish to be subjected to visions of excess fat and tattoos, crocs or mutton dressed as lamb.An eyesore is an eyesore.
I still don’t understand why Cougar and footflaps think it’s acceptable to be seen in public with the Sartorial elegance of a 12 year old.
I don't understand why you care.
Which, eh, was my point in the first place.
But not in my presence. I don’t wish to be subjected to visions of excess fat and tattoos, crocs or mutton dressed as lamb.An eyesore is an eyesore.
I don't have any of those things. And if I did, the problem would be yours.
Heaven forefend that you might clap eyes on an overweight person, would you like me to look into counselling for your PTSD?
I think we've reached a point in the discussion where you need to stump up photographs of your elegance before we continue.
i really have the urge to dress in the old skinhead gear. Ben Sherman/or Fred Perry, levis, dm's and braces. Probably feel a millions dollars, look a right t**t. Always wanted a union jack jacket like the Jam. 56 by the way
No man over 50 should ever be seen outdoors in a leather jacket,Jeans, trainers(unless running)or silly tee shirts.Think of other people who have to witness your lack of taste.Men over 60 I would recommend always wear a suit shirt and tie.It hides a multitude of sins.
You write fashion articles for the Daily Mail, and I claim my €5. Either that, or you unfortunately left of the 😉 at the end of your snarky comment.
If you’re serious, then you’ve basically described me, at the age of 66, and you’ve made a serious error there.
Cougar should try and be less defensive and develop some of djc's ambition.Scruffy to the grave is a bit depressing.
Cougar at al have a lovely attitude towards other people.I,m sensing destructive neurotic personality type.Grum points the way to their problem.
No problem, other than with the likes of you.

See, there you go again! You seem to think that there’s some sort of rule book that people have to abide by when it comes to what they wear, in order to meet the approval of you, and people like you.
Sorry, but who died and made you Elvis? If you’re actually serious, then you’re an unmitigated snob, and I have nothing but contempt for you, and your ilk.
Like Cougar, I’m coming up short on the number of *’s I couldn’t give for you or your opinions on what I wear. I will continue to wear what the hell I like with no regard for the opinion of anyone else, and if the circumstances call for dressing reasonably smart, I can do so, but those occasions are very few and far between.
I’m currently wearing a pair of black Route One cargo shorts, a baggy Troy Lee Designs long-sleeve tee shirt that’s well over twenty years old, probably nearer thirty, a Wrangler denim shirt over that, and Meindle Desert Fox ex-British Army combat boots, the most comfortable footwear after Vans skate shoes I’ve ever owned.
As far as the ‘youth of the district’ are concerned, they’re free to wear what the * they like, if I tried wearing what you seem to think appropriate in order to influence them, they’d just point at me in the street and laugh!
But not in my presence. I don’t wish to be subjected to visions of excess fat and tattoos, crocs or mutton dressed as lamb.An eyesore is an eyesore.
Bwahahahahahahaha! What a sad little man you are!. I’m probably skinnier than you are, I walk five or six miles a day as part of my job, although I do have tattoos; but so did most of the royal families of Europe, so I’m in extremely good company.
I do wear a pair of Crocs analogues around the house and garden, but I wouldn’t want to walk into town wearing them, not comfy enough.
Interesting username, ‘monkeyseemonkeydo’, considering its origin...
Cougar should try and be less defensive and develop some of djc’s ambition.Scruffy to the grave is a bit depressing.
I'm not defensive. I'm comfortable and have nothing to prove.
Photos or wind your neck in.
Also,
We've both been here a long old time and a) I generally consider CZ to be of higher 'class' than me despite the shit I might give him to the contrary and b) I think that's the first time I've ever seen him go off on one.
He's still a prick for wearing Crocs though. (-:
Definitely.I think count zero also has anger issues. As to justifying his tattoos with mentions of royal families that just shows how sad he is.LIKE PEOPLE WHO TRY TO FIT IN WITH SLOBS IN ASDA.
"But not in my presence. I don’t wish to be subjected to visions of excess fat and tattoos, crocs or mutton dressed as lamb.An eyesore is an eyesore"
then i'm afraid it would suggest that you either excell at being a boring little troll or have a very twisted perception of the world and some self esteem issues.
Its definately time for some photos of you dressed in your finest for others to judge. I and I'm sure cougar, count zero and others are more than happy to do the same.
so come on monkeycmonkeydo, lets see you strut your stuff
Before Elizabeth 1st the crown would tour with entourage and nobles often bankrupting their host. Eliz stopped that and nobles had to come to London 'for the season' and to get noticed by royals you needed to dress and wig up. Until the Tudor period generally people wore the 'uniform' that corresponded with their occupation/role and these were meant to be enforced by 'sumptuary' laws.
Since then dress has been symbolic of status, snobbery, ostentation, aspiration, inverted snobbery, upward and downward social mobility. It also has localised reference points. I happened across a group of traditional skinhead styles amongst Italian students in Venice, I'm sure 'NF' for them meant nothing whereas skinhead styles in some English towns sends out a very different message. There's a well developed two-tone scene in China. Try wearing a blue vest in Australia. 40 years ago you could spot a surfer by the tags/style of their clothes and then suddenly everyone everywhere was wearing it. A Barbour and English brogues used to be a sign of landed privilege and then I used to watch the fans going in at the Arsenal dressed like this, I don't think they were fresh off the farm. Michael Young (the nice father of the awful son) referred to it as 'stratified diffusion'. One of the few items of clothing to be upwardly mobile was the bowler hat, originally developed for gamekeepers and then became an essential item of the, or wannabe, middle classes.
Clothing then is functional and symbolic so the fashion industry is forever trying to change the parameters to get you to buy more. Despising someone's clothes is a perhaps more 'acceptable' form of prejudice and aggression, it's often about ridiculing someone's poverty or aspirations. Crocs might be a very healthy and functional FU to the fashion industry and the hierarchy of workwear. Wear what you want, in whatever combination forms your style, avoid outside labels, get the best crocs and camos you can afford and wear them to death, yours or theirs.
