Off to NYC in June, coincides with the girlfriends Birthday, so looking for somewhere a bit special to eat.

Don't want Italian or Asian.

Anything out there a bit special? Be nice if it had the wow factor.

Cheers

It is the best part of a decade since I lived there but the ones which seemed to be top of the list and top $$$ at the time were

1. Union Square Cafe
2. Gotham Bar/Grill
3. Gramercy Tavern

These are expensive places, but not unaffordable for a special occasion.

The other places I remember being very good are Mesa Grill, and Rosa Mexicana. A lot less formal but excellent food.

There is a bias in my "recommendations" in that 4 of them were pretty close to where I lived

One If By Land Two If By Sea.

The most romantic restaurant on the island. I went on my Honeymoon in April.

I can't recommend it highly enough. The Beef Wellington was to DIE for.

Second Rosa Mexicana if you're on a budget. They make Gauc right at your table and it's AWESOME!

+1

Not fancy or formal, but still classy and very good quality food.

And nowhere has more wow factor than Grand Central!

FFS where do you eat when you are not on a budget. Rosa Mex.. is by far from the most expensive place but IIRC correctly it was certainly cost more than you typical high end local neighbourhood restaurant!

I went to NY in late October and found this place:
http://www.aguadulceny.com/media/aguadulce.html

It has to be some of THE best food I've ever eaten. It was described as Pan Latin but I can't even describe the food to you! I think Mr MC had something like chicken and chorizo in valencia rice, everytthing on the menu sounded awesome and I couldn't decide! It was a little more expensive than other places but it was awesome value. The food was good, the care into making it look nice! I can't rave enough about it, the atmosphere was cool, the art deco surroundings! The cocktails were ace!!
Have I sold it to you yet? I would LOVE to go back there. Would be nice and romantic too!
Let us know where you decide in the end, plus it's maybe 10 minute walk from Time Square so central and easy to get to.

Nobu was nice - if you turn up without booking & aren't fussy about your table you should be ok
Ben Benson was a more American (in a good way) meal - if you go have some Ridge Zinfandel for me

Bubba Gump Resturant, over looks time square. bubbagump.com?

When we went, we got a Pedicab from 55th Street 7th Ave down there.

Cycling through NYC at night is one of the best rides I've done!

The river cafe in brooklyn.

on the waterfront right by the brooklyn bridge overlooking downtown manhattan

Went there on honeymoon- bloody excellent- very expensive but that's what you'd expect and you'll probably only do it once

http://www.rivercafe.com/

Also the rainbow rooms at the rockefeller centre - looks out at the ESB.

http://www.rainbowroom.com/

Well that's clsed now so that's out- but it is a special venue if open.

Just to update, . . . we ended up at the River Cafe in Brooklyn, which was amazing, great food, location, service, awesome! Just a note if your going to go, go in a jacket or you have to wear ones that they have just in case you forget. I didn't, but some did and they looked rather sheepish in front of their ladies!

Also ate at the Spotted Pig which was nice if not a little pricey for what you get. We did sit opposite the girl and the guy who got married in Momma Mia in the movie though!

Cheers all for the guidance.
