In my last job i had some sucess with being honest in the performance management reviews. They asked what area of the job i would like to improve in and i said none. I told them i had plenty going on outside work and was happy to just show up and do the job they employed me to do and “meet expectations”. My manager was a bit shocked but they let me get on with it.

That's not far off where I am with my manager but our company doesn't work that way.

My direct manager is really supportive but only so much he can do.  His kids are grown and gone to Uni whereas I have an 8yr old and he said his regret was working away their childhood and he'd support me at least getting to see my family most weekends.  (This conversation taking place an 8 hour flight away at weekend)

The other thing I’ve considered is renting out a holiday cottage.

We are currently looking at house and entirely possible to get one in our price range with out buildings that could quite easily be turned in to a holiday cottage.

Is it more hassle than it’s worth though ?
