I wasn't aware that this new 3.0 m3 existed! A quick search on autotrader only turns up 4 door saloons, where's the coupes and cab's? Not out yet?
I'd love a 993 but with the prices on the rise still I'd be lucky to find a decent one for less than £45k now.
2unfit2ride - you might be right. I definately want 4 seats, convertible and fast but they inevitably come with large repair and servicing costs which I don't want. Maybe I'm after something that doesn't exist.
I was thinking m4 as it's relatively mainstream and a lot come with 5 year service packs so maintenance is low for the time I'll probably have it.
911 because at the moment they seem depreciation proof and running costs aren't too horrendous as long as I got a decent one.
When I read about horrendous brake costs for audi rs4 cabs etc that sort of stuff puts me off.
So I want the three things above plus minimal running costs. Someone earlier suggested the 440i, maybe that would be a better option than the m4. But it doesn't look as good.......
See, you really have no idea what you want, you said fast, but then said you wanted a 993, they were fast in there time but pedestrian now, a new golf would kill it. You also said not hard to drive, again anything classic may come as a shock to you. There has also been mention of Mercs, defiantly not fun in anything other than a straight line, same goes for the Mustang, so do you want fun as in a sports car that handles or a fast car with toys that will impress the neighbours?
I'm in no way having a go at you, but modern cars are so very different to cars less than a decade old.
Cheers.
Squealer - what did you think to the 640i posted earlier?

The original post makes no mention of fast. Fun, yes. Fast, no.
Just looking at an article on 911 and it seems you would struggle to get a 997.2 cab for under £50k. So maybe out of budget. However if you like them (and I do) they are great drives. Hopefully you might find one.
@ski - utterly impractical but AC 289/427 replica kit cars can be amazing. If only I had the garage space!

Hold on, did the original OP list mention
Shortlist so far is BMW m4 (eldest sons choice) or a newer 911 cabrio (my choice). Audi rs5 doesn't seem to appeal for some reason.
Anything else I should be looking at?
In what world is that not a fast cars list?

It is clearly a fast cars list but he asked for cars that are fun. This is probably why he's struggling as fast does not necessarily equate to fun. You appear to have the same misconception.
It is a lot more fun to drive a slow car quickly than a fast car slowly.
All i can do is post an emoji 😆
I have to say the m6 is the winner for me. Great choice given the requirements.
Upshift - that 640 ticks all the boxes,
I'm surprised actually having just looked at them as I'd dismissed them straight away as a car for the more "mature" generation.
I'm not entirely convinced about the looks, the bit at the back when the roof is up is horrible but in black on black they are actuallly alright.
Another one to think about!
Can't see that its been mentioned but Nissan Skyline GTR would be where my money would be spent.
So much nicer than an M6
Having owned a GTR for 4 years I can tell you although it was a fabulous car the interior is a bit meh, and the running costs are ridiculous, and you need a lot of space to have fun.
Hence why I now have an M2 🙂

Doesn't the OP want a convertible though....?

don't you go worrying about one of the key aspects of the question.

The coupes and cabs are out but no longer called an M3; they're M4's now. BMW have decided that all coupes and cabs will have even numbers hence the 2 series being released.
I think the M3 in particular looks fab, but I can't get past the noise which for me is key. Merc managed it with the new C63 which still sounds very naughty if not quite as filthy as the last model.
Maybe an S4 convertible then?
Still fast, still nice enough to sit in but not quite as expensive to run as the RS model?
Apologies on the GTR suggestion - my fault for not reading the job spec 🙂
So I listed to all your advice and bought a car from my original list!
M4 cab arriving next week.
Thanks for all the suggestions!
