We replaced a Dyson Animal Corded with a Shark Cordless (after endless recomendations on here). I was pretty sceptical at first, but it picks up more cat hair than the Dyson (we have four cats). Very impressed by it. We've given the Dyson away now, as it has been surpassed.

It's like people when they say Tannoy when they mean public address system. Tannoy is a brand name.

Sebo FTW.

Sebo for an upright. Not bagless but tremendous pick up and fills the bag like a cushion, so doesn't require emptying frequently. Very well thought out features e.g. tool free quick removal of brush so that you can remove long hairs easily, dust free bag changes.

Many people will be along to slate them shortly but our Dyson DC25-animal refuses to die its 6 years old. Gets abused, has been through the renovation of two houses so far, chewing through plaster dust, rats nest clean ups and the daily clean up after our two long haired dogs. Its easy to strip down and clear any blockages. Filters are quick and easy to wash or replace.

Apparently it depends on carpet type, who knew?
We got loop pile for stairs, landing, plus 1 room and were told we shouldn't use a powered spinny head, which is annoying as you can't get a decent non spinny head for the Dyson cordless V8 (unless anyone knows differently).
To do with breaking fibres and wear on carpet.
I know the answer is Henry but I like cordless and as stairs attest the spinny heads are better a getting mud out.

Must be something in the air as we are also in the market for a new (cordless) vacuum, watching with interest. Flaps, which Shark you go for?

it is a sad thing to be impressed by, but the Shark is ace. The cordless one, with two batteries, and animal tech (we don't have animals, but the females of the house have long hair. Same thing!)

And the [free] car attachments are more useful than I thought they would be.

not to come over all middle class, before we had it we had a Dyson. And the cleaner would bring her own Henry over. Since we've got the Shark, the Henry has not been back.

We decided to get a cordless to keep upsstairs after my Mrs was ill & couldn't haul the upright Dyson around so well. I didn't want a Dyson for obvious reasons but she liked the colour so that's what we got.
It's actually pretty good.

This one...

We can clean the whole house on one charge. It also comes with an impressive selection of attachments for different surfaces.

Sebo. Bagged, upright and powerful. After years of farting about with bagless Dyson, Hoover and Panasonic (to be fair the Panasonic was o.k but they don't make vacuums any more) Decided to go old school and get a bagged upright, was considering a Miele but couldn't find an upright by them so plumped for a Sebo. Can't fault it.

All very sad, but very impressed by the under bed feature....

There was a lot of hair and fluff under ours, I possibly removed an entire eco system with its own civilisation....

owned several dysons, corded, cordless, upright, pull along. all have suffered reduced suction after about 6 months of use and no amount of cleaning, refurbing etc solves it.

had a vax industrial hoover which had so much power you could hardly move the head along the carpet.

had a hoover, which was good, but motor died.

Have had a shark corded upright for about a year. It just keeps going. pet hair, no problem. long human hair, no problem. cleaning out the ash from the fire, no problem (maybe just a filter clean afterwards). Overzealous hoover roulette (you know, lets see what objects it can vacuum up as I can't be arsed bending over to pick it up), yep, no problem.

best vacuum we've bought.

As someone who hates vacuuming I can recommend Shark liftaway. It's very adaptable and it's a satisfying to see how much dirt it picks up. Might be worth waiting til Black Friday as I saved 50% in this week's Amazon Prime deals so hopefully similar deals next month.

Just to give you another option check out the Vax Blade, like many others sceptical but actually really impressed and not a million quid like the Dysons :/

We bought a Shark corded vacuum at the start of lockdown to replace a very old Henry and an asthmatic Vax. It's excellent

They've usually got some offers too

We bought a Shark during lockdown as they were on offer and extra off with a Blue Light Card. The Mrs wanted something easier to use then our trusty Dyson. It’s excellent so much easier to use very light we got the cordless pet one. It doesn’t like picking up larger stuff that the Dyson would swallow but I think that’s to do guards for the hair.

So yes Shark if like me you have 3 people with long hair in the house get anti hair one.

I went off Vax after I ordered a carpet cleaner and they sent me a faulty one. It even had faulty writton on the box and the exact fault on the label. I naively assumed they'd repaired it, but no it was broken exactly as the box clearly stated....

Isn't the dust thingy on the Shark tiny though? Having a dog and vac'ing our house once a week leaves our Dyson (old one, DC14 maybe?) dust thingy absolutely rammed, and it's miles bigger than the one on the Shark looks.

We picked up a Dyson V10 from their refurb store in April 2020 and so far so good. It replaced a Henry hoover, it is a lot more convenient to use being able to blast round the house quickly and easily, but that could just be the benefit of being lighter and cordless.

Have kept the Henry for car hoovering duties as the Dyson isnt great in the tight footwells.

If you want a hoover, buy a hoover.
If you want a vacuum, buy a Sebo.

When the previous Dyson gave up the cleaners asked if we could just get a Henry.

They just work.

Every-so-often we need to buy bags.

Really really don't get a Miele. They are ****ing awful. So much friction that you can't actually run the damn thing across the floor without straining your back. loathe the damn thing

Yeah it’s small but can do a couple of rooms or a whole house depending on how often you clean, it takes seconds to empty.

How big is the hand held bit of the shark vs the cordless dyson?  Ours is in need of replacement and I’m looking at the shark to replace the handheld  and possibly the upright too.

Yep, but it packs a lot in - dust and hair compress pretty well. I can do the whole house on it (ok its completely rammed by that point, but still works).

Miele Cat and Dog. I have no idea whether that fits in your budget, but the amount of shite it gets out of my carpet is prodigious.

Random Miele recommendation here, ours has been great

11years old now (bought with vouchers from our wedding) and it died at the weekend, motor appears to have gone, with 4 kids this is a disaster!

rang them today about a repair, they said would be £125 to refurb it, which sounded OK

but they offered me a 50% discount off a new one, got a c3 cat & dog for £150 delivered, wasnt expecting that so very pleased

Henry

OH has a Dyson, it's crap..... nightmare to clean out
I have a Henry my mum gave me because it was too heavy for he and a little mini shark thing ....
Henry sucked up countless bags of plaster/rubble and assorted rubbish.... and its dead easy to clean.

This is not a recommendation at all but we have a Dyson cordless which is marginally flimsy but has worked well for the last 3 years and is great for quick work.

Had a Miele Cat and Dog which was good but died during building work.

Bought a Henry for £50 and it's fab for the tough jobs but not as good for standard carpet cleaning.

A good friend (who's very house proud) swears by Sebo uprights for carpet stuff.

Our Shark corded is about 6 year sold and has been brilliant. Its started making some dodgy noises recently and that is now supplemented by a burning smell. It owes me nothing though as its been used most days for 6 years, including months of builders debris.

I'll definitely be buying another Shark, will go cordless this time.

My vote goes for a Henry, cheap, pretty much indestructible (a mate had a super expensive one for their cleaner and a Henry they let the builders use 😂). You can easily buy spares for the Henrys as well.

Also a spinning brush attachment is available that does a great job on carpets.

I would prefer corded as it should last longer than cordless, also trying to avoid buying more kit with non-standard or proprietary internal batteries.

You can buy Dyson spares very easily too. I just replaced two lost tools for about a tenner together on a 17 year old Dyson DC20 (which by the way works perfectly still and has zero issues).

If you are interested in Cordless, go to Currys where they'll have all their cordless options lined up in order of cost. When I went in they were all pretty asthmatic (inc Shark and Dyson V8) next to the Dyson V10 which was in another league. According to their 'air watts' numbers it has nearly double the suction power.

Bosch do a cordless that's got even more suction than the v11 I think too.
