I have discovered some fantastic music this year and thought I would share a few of my favourites.

Ismael Lo - The Balladeer, best of
Afro Pop

The Whitest Boy Alive - Dreams
Funk, indie pop, new wave

Newton Faulkner - everything he has done

Anyone got any recommendations along these lines or anything of note you have found recently as always looking for 'new' music.

Fat Freddys Drop. Funky as the proverbial gibbon.

DJ Koze - experimental electronic
Alunageorge - Electro-pop with great vocals
Child of Lov - kind of rap/pop/indie
Young Fathers - rap
All new to me this year, along with loads more.

Edward sharpe and the magnetic zero's - sort of hippy hillbilly gospel.

I'm listening to mostly Rival Sons, Kurt Vile and Grizzly Bear at the moment.

Chromatics - Chilled out electronic music that sounds like everything has a purpose, not just mindless loops designed to get radio plays. Spotify link

Marika Hackman - Folk music with hints of mediaeval styles and scales. Well sung and manages to stay interesting after multiple listens instead of being two-dimensional like some folk can be. Also, another vote for AlunaGeorge, for managing to mix pop and R&B and still sound fresh.

EDIT: OH, and The Weeknd! Makes hip-hop but is actually a skilled vocalist that hits some brilliant notes. Maybe not to everyone's taste, but give him a try.

Too much, but one that springs to mind as I was just listening is Spazzkid.

PS if you like the whitest boy alive, check out Erlend Oye's solo stuff and kings of convenience.
