Surely in most leave-land areas there are roughly 50% of people who didn’t vote leave? Also, in most remain-land areas there will be roughly 50% of people who voted leave.
No - (across the whole country) there are actually only just over 1/4 of the population who voted to leave. Just under 1/4 voted to stay. About 1/4 were not eligible to vote (EU citizens, under 18 in 2016, not registered etc), and 1/4 didn't bother to vote when they could have.
In Northumberland about 30% actually voted to leave. Presumably some of them voted that way because they are xenophobic/racist, however a fair proportion were just objecting to the status quo, a protest vote for change and against the government rather than expecting to win.
Depends on how white you are, the first time I ever had to deal with comments like "why didn't you marry someone British" was after the referendum.
You feel the stares after you leave the south.
I’m a Northumbrian and I would have to say mostly I grew up around non Racist lovely decent folks
Germans were friendly decent folk in the 30s, according to their own view of themselves.
Still managed to gas a lot of people.
Then had the gall to say "we're not culturally corrupt, I never knew nuffin honest guv. Were nice really, want some schnitzel?" during the 50s.
In fact I think the OP is being absolutely ridiculous.
This.
I mean clearly the OP is having a wind up but the elitist condescending and down right ridiculous comments that follow are born of the staggering arrogance that caused the vote to be lost in the first place.
And you, Raybanwomble, are part of the problem with stuff like that. Old grudges and bearing them.
As the time approaches, and Brexit approaches quicker, I am seized with doubt, because MrsJ is one of those dirty forriners that we want to get rid of when we take back control of our borders, if not our bowels. Northumberland seems to be Leave-land, so I am concerned that she will be subject to unpleasantness – if not official then at least nasty looks, rude comments etc. In fairness, I will probably be subject to similar, being an outsider from N Yorks an’ all.
I don't see any part of N Yorks that didn't vote for leave, so I wonder why the ( some what prejudiced ) worry on your part - you are moving from a place that voted one way, to a different place that voted the same way ?
Obviously! Makes my Iraqi neighbors racist and my youngest sons best mates family (from India) racist , oh and the lovely Iranian bloke at the sweet shop he’s a complete racist . Must be they all voted leave.
Interestingly, there is often a higher incidence of prejudice in the UK population in people who have immigrated to the UK than for those born here.
And you, Raybanwomble, are part of the problem with stuff like that. Old grudges and bearing them.
My point is, is that everyone, including Nazis - think that they are decent good folk. And that their culture isn't morally bankrupt.
Doesn't make it so.
Of course racists are going to deny voting for racist reasons.
Screaming "elitism" is an attempt to avoid that thought, especially when it's clearly been demonstrated that xenophobia contributed to the vote.
I don’t see any part of N Yorks that didn’t vote for leave
Apart from Harrogate district and York. But carry on.
This thread appears to have gone Godwin rather quickly.
If there is a leson to be learned from the 30s that minority governments can hijack power and do things with the complicity of what would normally be the opposition that screw it up for everyone including themselves, which is about where the UK is right now.
can hijack power and do things with the complicity of what would normally be the oppositiin
It wasn't just the complicity of opposition in the 30s, it was the apathetic complicity of a lot of people who mildly hated Jews and anyone who wasn't German, Hungarian, Austrian or Italian as well.
Good Lord. Just go there. Most people are fine wherever you go. You come across as some kind of Guardian reading Beta male, scared of your own shadow.
which is about where the UK is right now.
Horseshit. Comparing Brexit UK with 1930's Germany.
Utter, utter, tripe.
Suggest you go and revise a bit of history.
seem to recall reading an article with a journalist visiting the heart of Leave-land and that was Stoke on Trent - I've never been on holiday to Stoke
Anyone fancy a pint?

Sounds more like Brexit by the second. If this is 1932/2019 bookmark the thread for 2025.
Hmm, well, I was just watching a Channel 4 News item about Blyth. Apparently local Labour MP, and ardent Brexiteer Ronnie Campbell is in favour of voting with Maybot in return for cash to open a factory for Heather Mills (yes, you heard right) to produce vegan foods.
