late night was a surprisigly not bad film.

Saw brightburn last night.
It could have been better. It could have been much better, but the characters were a bit flat and it had a feeling of a straight to stream, horror channel filler.

It's a no from me.

I love the concept here (what if Superman was an evil little shit?!) but it's been getting a panning so won't bother, sounds like a real missed opportunity as I really like left-field/unusual super hero films (when not shit)

Hi everyone. The last movie I have seen was John Wick 3 and I really like it. I can totally recommend it.

Took my lad (3 1/2 years) to the cinema for his first time yesterday for Toy Story 4. Most enjoyable, plenty for young and old to enjoy alike.

Actually, he went to Deadpool when he was only a few weeks old, so I suppose this was his 2nd trip!

Hi, turboferret. Don't you think he was too yang to watch Deadpool where we can see lots of violence and other bad stuff?😆

Watched Snatch the other night, and whilst still amusing I don't think I noticed at the time how pishpoor the acting was! Took the kids to see Aladdin the next day only to find it was directed by Guy Ritchie also. Kids enjoyed it and I never fell asleep, not a patch on RW's Genie though.

I had never seen a Toy Story movie in the cinema before, s it was fantastic to share the experience as a family on Sunday watching Toy Story 4. My kids, especially my 5 year old girl, just loves Toy Story so it was a little bit dusty in cineworld screen 11 on Sunday, for my wife and I. A brilliant movie and how great to be able to share a cinema experience like that with your kids. But I would stress, it is not just a kids film. There were a few adults sans kids enjoying the movie too, and quite right.

If only there were 2 or 3 other similar films so people would realise this... 😉

As he was asleep in a car seat the whole time, I don't think he will have been too badly scarred 😀

Yesterday - nice high concept marriage from Richard Curtis and Danny Boyle.

Very well done, great cinematography and editing. Liked the charming leads and the snotty manager.

Drags a little in the middle but a nice ending.

Was that Begbie on the beach? 😉

Double-bill... Midsommar.

Remember Hereditary? (same Director) - Well if you didn't like the last 10mins of that (which I did) then you're not going to like 2hrs 20mins of ritual and no real audience participation.

Such a shame; daylight horror has a ring of dread to it - but this is a proper indulgent patience testing experience.

A couple of promising moments are never expanded on, and the characters come and go throughout this Wickerman wannabe.

Seems like a first draft edit to me too.

Good opening - then go home.

I watched Captive State the other day.

It’s about the world 10 years post Alien Invasion, they won, we lost. Most of the planet has accepted them as our leaders and are fairly complicit in it.

The story follows a small band of resistance fighters / insurgents and the human police force trying to wipe them out.

It’s NOT an action film, although quite violent at times, you rarely, if at all see aliens but it’s very good.

There are lots of parallels with real life and the old saying ‘one mans freedom fighter is another Man’a terrorist’.

I love the songs in Aladdin and this is a pretty decent version. My only disappointment was with Jafar, nowhere near as dark/evil as the animated Jafar.

I loved Captive State, I did see the end coming but it’d seen a similar plot before but can’t remember what film or book it was. Actually thinking back it was a SF short story. But no spoilers from me. Liked John Goodman in it, with this and Cloverfield Lane he’s letting another side come through. Like Robin Williams when he decided he didn’t have be lovable in every movie and then went on to do some really creepy roles.

Midsommar last night.
6/10 ... and a big chunk of that for some excellent cinematography and Florence Pugh.

@rone
Aye,it had some promising moments but then didn't follow through and felt like it got a bit lost . Kept making me think of 'The Endless' more than 'Wicker Man'

Watch out for those cults kids.

It does look good doesn't it!

The trailer really don't give away much of the story, but from what I've read it's not going to be a 'nice' one. (As you'd expect with QT).

Tarantino is only going to make one more film after this one! How mad is that?!

The trailer really don’t give away much of the story
My understanding, without spoiling anything, is it's about an actor (Leonardo) and his stuntman (Bradley) during the time of the Manson murders. I think Leonardo's character lives next door to Sharon Tate.

Yeah, pretty much, but a bit like Pulp Fiction, they're the two leads, but there be will a few stories/characters happening at once which will come together at the end.

I don't know if it will be his last, he was only going to make 8 (the Hateful 8 being the 8th) but it's not really clear how he got to that number, he's written, directed and produced far more than 8 and has at least 2 new flims in the pipeline he's involved in.

He's said it's the "glory of 10" films. So reckons one more. Then it'll be an even dozen 🙂

Completely agree. We're certainly out of step with Kermode in this one.

Forgot to mention one of the best films I've seen this year - pretty much straight to stream - is 'Arctic' with Mads Mikkelsen.

An exceptionally good survival film with plenty of surprises. In my top 5 this year.

Yes - very excited about OUATIH. New full trailer makes more sense.

Saw the new spiderman film last night.

It was a fun, brain out thing with a less than impressive plot, but meanders through OK.

It's not Toby Maguire, but it's also thankfully not the other fella.

Saw Toy Story 4 with my boy last week, I laughed more than him but not as much as the Mum behind me. Did they concentrate too much on the jokes for the adults? Bo Peep though.... Woody is a lucky guy.
Also saw the Secret Life of Pets 2 recently and thought the same - lots of funny bits for the adults. Maybe I just love kids films.
Speaking of which, really looking forward to Lion King in a couple of weeks.

I follow Sir Patrick Stewart on insta, on his feed he’s got a new advert for a Star Trek movie called Picard...

Could this be true (just googled it) ? But just says TV series...

I think I'm done with Superhero films - Spiderman: Far From Home was pretty rubbish.
There's this one section, 15-20mins of "HEY! Look what we can do with CGI!" and I completely lost interest after that.
Wish the kids had opted for Toy Story 4.

Midsummar last night, loved it. Can see why it divides opinion as it is a right slow burner and not much happens, apart from weird rituals. But it was different enough for me to be engrossed throughout.
I would say, the thing that stops it being an absolute classic (I think I preferred Hereditary) is that there isn’t enough actual horror to make it watchable more than once or twice - and it won’t translate to the tv screen too well. For a late showing the cinema was quite busy last night, only 1 couple walked out that I saw and there was only about 10 mins to go!

Finally saw Alita last night. Well worth the wait. Although it wasn't exactly original it certainly was very likeable. Well paced and good enough effects. Roll on the sequel and a bit more Ed Norton.

Had a free UHD stream from an app on my telly, so watched Captain Marvel. Not sure if a super-hero film can be any less super. So dull. Really badly cast lead actor as well. Funniest thing was she couldn't run properly, so they had to edit in a double whenever they showed her running. That really was the only thing that kept me watching.

I saw The Lion King last night and was really impressed. I spent the whole film trying decide if it was CGI or live action or a mix of the two. If you liked the original (as I did) then you should like this.

Once Upon a Time In Hollywood.

Superb.
Pitt and DeCaprio are on top form .
I loved the whole 35mm analogue thing, it all just looked so right ,and a well chosen soundtrack .
Already planning to go and see it again.

It's a 9/10 from me.

Nice one fasthaggis - seeing it this weekend.

Need to erase the memory of the last film I saw (I'm almost too ashamed to say it's name) my son made me go, we were at BPW, staying in Merthyr and there was nothing else to do!! HONEST!
It was Hobbs & Shaw. I tried so hard to just not care and enjoy it. But, my god, every second of it treats the viewer like a ****ing idiot. Even the supposed banter between the two main stars was just poorly scripted and downright stupid - The wittiest line being "Your mum" iirc.
I was begging for Tarantino dialogue! 😆

It was Hobbs & Shaw.
Saw it last night. Best film of the franchise so far (bar maybe the first, but that's VERY different from the later films). The Rock! The Stath!! The BANTZ!!! Ditching the dead wood (Diesel, et al) was a great move. Idris was on cracking form as a hammy super-villain. The thing I love most about these films is, just as you think it can't get any more ridiculous, IT DOES. Over & over again! My inner child was clapping with glee. I normally find CGI-heavy movies a total borefest, these effects were well done though and look good (for now... shame they've moved away though from the practical driving stunts of the originals that still look great) plus the chemistry between the 3 leads and the baddy was great with some sparkling dialogue (an adroitly timed "your mum" from Dwayne Johnson being the pinnacle). Overall, awesome 11/10. 😃

^^ That's what I wanted to say! But it was utter shite. Especially the bit on the plane when the extremely unfunny Kevin Hart appeared and made the bantz even less funny than they already were.
My inner child only seems to work on mountain bikes.

don't you ever get sick of being wrong all the time? Music, movies... 😂 I will give you Kevin Hart though, normally don't mind him but they had packed a lot into this film; he was totally unnecessary.

Anyone seen OUATIH yet! Hearing mixed things. Can't see it until Monday.

Saw Wild Rose last night. An enjoyable 'Brit-Grit' Star is Born flick that avoids the rags to riches clichés whilst delivering a satisfying pay off.

Jessie Buckley is very good. (She's in Chernobyl).

Blinded by the Light was good last night. A real flashback for Mrs S and me when the back of NME showed the ad for The Tunnel Of Love Tour and we both said "we were at that one" (Villa 21/22 June). Some good social history and a soundtrack that wasn't just The Boss. They managed to make 80's Luton as bad as I remember it from driving lessons.

Probably the second quarter is, if you’re not actually Quentin Tarantino, extremely boring. It’s rather indulgent, full of intimate detail around 60s/70s Hollywood.. being a Brit, all the radio and Tv nostalgia is just meaningless. Picks up in the second half and by the end you’ve erased it from memory.
At least 4 people walked out of the cinema. I wasn’t close to doing that, but was wishing he’d get on with the actual plot.

I had a similar experience to DezB, there were large parts that I was wondering what would I cut? kinda interesting and kinda boring at the same time. I was wishing there had been a story : )
