Do I need a fancy battery charger to charge a gel battery on a biggish (800cc) motorcycle? Or will this one do: http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/612v-12amp-metal-case-battery-charger-r01ra

Is it all marketing guff or is there some difference between the above and something like an https://www.infinitymotorcycles.com/product/optimate-3-battery-charger/4706 Optimate motorcycle specific charger?

Seems like a scam? But maybe I have no idea what i'm talking about.

Get the optimate.
They do a lot more than "just" charge and are designed for smaller batteries.
the "gel" part makes no difference - its the physical size, amperage, etc that is important.

Why is the battery going flat? I'd probably answer that question first. Never had it happen to either of mine.

You want a slow charger for gel batteries imo.

The battery went flat because i left the heated grips on.

I've used various types over the years on my Caterham (20A/h battery) and am very happy with the Ctek chargers.
