Who stores 200,000lb of fertilizers next to a care home, a hospital and a residential area.

And then who films it from well within the zone where the blast can potentially kill you? Americans of course....consequently RIP 70 people.

70 injured I think, no deaths reported on BBC at least.

And you would have known that was within the potentially lethal blast radius?

On balance, your cleverness in the latter must balance out the former.

All the American agencies are reporting 70 deaths.

Well, If I was a local and knew that was a fertilizer plant I'd stay the **** away.

A blast that big will send things like tractors flying for hundreds of meters. Might as well have just detonated a Davy Crockett in the middle of a small town.

Let this be a reminder for rubber neckers...it might lead to you getting permanent deafness.

Do we store that much fertilizer next to peoples houses in the uk?

It's not racism if it's perfectly true.

Oooh right enough Today has reported 100 deaths.

Of course it's not racism, it's bigotry - which is fine.

Yes we do.

There is a Yara storage place less than a mile from my house, which is in the centre of the village (and less than 100m from other peoples houses) its also about 200 metres from the medical centre and a large primary school.

The site has a store that's 21,000m3

How much do they store there?

Remind me to never buy a house in your area.

Many many times more than the 200,000 lbs you mentioned above.

That's only 90 tonnes or so. What's that, 3 or 4 wagon loads ?

non of us will have any idea where fertiliser is stored in relation to housing, or even, if theres recommendations or legislation in place, whether those rules are being adhered to all down the supply chain. Fertiliser is made, distributed, stored, sold, and used throughout our crowded little island so I suspect often near to where people live.

God....and the nimby's complain about nuclear power plants...

the thing is....Texans have plenty of space to stick those things quite a way out of town....as evidenced by google maps.... apparently they don't have zoning laws in Austin and the surrounding area

Yorkshire isn't exactly full yet is it ?

Can't you just say that it's a tragedy and a sad loss of life without feeling the need to have a pointless (and apparently uninformed) dig at America in the process 😐

Bwaarp, aren't you training to be a doctor?
You do seem a bit ill suited to it, if I may so, judging by your lack of compassion, your arrogance, and anger issues.

Yes yes, great casual racism there.

Stupidity storing fertilizer near a town, maybe, but no where near as stupid as locating a huge oil storage depot between a large town and a main transport link then letting that blow up! Buncefield anyone? I seem to remember a number of schools and office blocks were damaged there.

It's not racism. How about Jingoism?

It's pretty horrific to see the coverage, it seems that an ammonia tank is what went up. That is really bad stuff when it goes. I wish those involved like the missing firefighters well and hope they are ok.

Also in Texas:

Read a good book about it once, while ago though.

I believe the OP is studying to be a medical scientist or something along those lines. He'd be wasted on merely practising medicine.

another tragic example of laissez faire capitalism, most of the time we just ignore the potential preventable disaster, until it flares up, usually its in the 'developing world' so barely rates a mention unless its on a Bopal scale..... but this sort of thing can occur virtually anywhere.....and to think there are people who want no rules and regulations for things--the true free marketeers.... 🙄

if you want to know what hazards may be near your home you should consult the local Communtiy Risk Register, try your local authority, or library. They should also have the contingency plans for any eventuality arising from the risk.

The Texas City disaster in 1947 was 2.3ktons of the stuff. Made that one look like a firework display.

But... you can store it near my house if you like. I'm more likely to be hit by a car, or lightening, than get blown up.

Yeah, only Americans would be that dumb....... The UK would never dream of sticking something like an oil refinery next to a town

Why do people suddenly think they are experts about things like this when they get behind their keyboard and make daft stuff up?

I frequently map worst case event envelopes as part of COMAH - thousands of people in the UK live within and in close proximity to much bigger potential events than this one, such as places like Grangemouth as posted previously.

They probably think "it's not real life" so they can say what they want.

Plus will take any tiny chance available to have a go at whatever they don't seem to like (in this case "stupid Americans")
