What is the best all in one microphone for recording a guitar etc. and voice that can be plugged directly into a computer?
I have no idea where to start so all suggestions would be appreciated

I have not used one, but if you don't have a audio interface (soundcard) with mic preamps then the Samson C01U USB might be worth a look.

may be a stupid question but how do I know if I have a soundcard?
Its a laptop by the way

Then you can go USB or Firewire. If you have a Mac, look at the Apogee stuff. Windows equivalents exist.

have a look at something designed for recording rather than a laptop & heath robinson plug-in. For example, Olympus LS-5 or LS-11
