No not you in yr Slayer shirt, you with the lathe and drill!
I have to manufacture a rust-less metal plate with a 1/4 threaded hole having 20 threads per inch*
No idea what I need. Currently have vice, file and hacksaw. Assuming drill and tap? Have to complete whole job with vice and hand-tools.
Links appreciated. Cheaper = better 🙂
*To accept camera tripod mount.
Metalwork GCSE?
Metalwork GCSE?
That was a million years ago and was Not Paying Attention In Class 😳
Already sounds like you know what you're doing 🙂
I think it's 1/4" whitworth which needs a 5.1mm drill.

^ nope, am only with smartphone and battery dies fast. Looked on Ebay but tap things had drop-down options that are Dutch to me. Also won't I need a grip/handle of some sorts to hold and turn the tap?? Buy a set or just the specifics? Argh
what do you mean by rust-less?
A plate that has no rust on it, or a plate that won't rust in the future?
Yeah the latter, rustproof sorry. Assuming some kind of steel as alu too soft for repeat use? Oh gods
*Edit looking on Wiki , poss now might need a 'chaser' too?
I may as well be shopping for babyclothes or building a rocket...

wiki says UNC
Some info here about halfway down the first table:

If you use stainless steel, just check what you will be threading into the hole. If it's stainless steel into stainless steel then beware of galling.

Edit - 1/4-20 UNC thread is suggested - please check
Careful of grade of stainless - some is more hand workable than others.
tracey tools for a tap n drill of decent quality.
You will need a tap wrench as well (mole grips will do if you are not cack handed)
something like http://www.tracytools.com/taps-and-dies/BSW-taps-dies/1-4-x-20-tpi-bsw
Just phone them and they will help you out with a drill
Must use tapping compound/fluid
learn to draw file (just look it up) to get a decent finish on the edges of the plate.
Thnks but ^ 27 quid from HK?
Would ideally be making two or three for same cost? Possibly more later. Not sure if needs to be stainless steel. Is only for fixing boxes and drawing-boards. But will be used outdoors.
^ looks like that's the first purchase along with fluid thnks!
Yep, not cheap but its got a best offer option too 😀 .
Didn't realise you were after more than one, but still add up the cost of materials and tools before you dismiss it. Also think they will look better and be more accurately made than anything made by hand.
how about this one...

Coming at it from another angle - could probably do with wood panel and captive prong tee nut? But is an M6 tee nut the same as 1/4 20 UNC tee nut? Why is it so haaaaaaard!
http://www.tracytools.com/taps-and-dies/UNC-taps/1-4-x-20-tpi-unc
M6 is not the same

What will screw into plate ?
M6 is not the same
Dammit Janet!
Thnks though, saved me some grief.
To screw in a regular tripod. I have found a pack of 1/4 20 UNC captive prong tee nuts for a couple of quid but they don't take Paypal and filling out long and buggy forms on this phone makes me want to throw stuff. Better than hours of sawing, drilling, tapping and filing though ;). Maybe not.
Thnks all!
