So what happens to this old geezer now then?

Points on his nonexistent licence?
A fine?

Will he not be hauled in front of a court of some flavour? (Magistrates perhaps?)

It feels like seven decades of rolling the dice with other people's safety and property needs a bit more legal examination than a "well done for not crashing"...

While yes he has done wrong, I imagine that given he is probably statically a safer driver than most others, and given his age, any case would likely fall within the "not in the best interest of the public".  Fine and driving ban I imagine will be the most severe outcome.

Yes, his car will have been impounded and only released (after paying a hefty fee) when someone who is insured and licensed comes to collect it.

Then he will be reported and eventually appear in court. He’ll be looking at 6-8 points (theoretically a ban is possible) and several hundred pounds in fines and costs.

The bigger challenge for him will be not to drive again - I bet it’s not 70 yrs before he gets caught again. Passing a test in your 80s with 70 years of bad habits is not going to be trivial.

I thought they factored that in. New car for £500 every few years is cheaper than insurance. Points – I doubt they care, can’t put points on if they don’t have a licence. If they are happy to not pay road tax, insurance or not have a licence I really don’t think a driving ban will stop them.

Not having a license doesn’t stop you getting points. Dvla create a “ghost” license for you so if you ever apply it comes with some nice points to start with and if you get 12 pts on your ghost license you are banned from holding or obtaining a license just like the rest of us. Get caught whilst banned and jail time is a realistic prospect. Yes there are people who just flout the rules and don’t give a shit - but those are people who don’t care about criminal convictions, will pay fines at £5 a fortnight (or not at all and do a few weeks in jail for that) etc. it’s not “cheaper” for most law abiding citizens to just ignore the law, although if you’ve been a stupid 17 yr old and driven without insurance 3 times and served a ban then at 19/20 it may be virtually impossible to get insurance (especially if you are broke) so it does become a self fulfilling prophecy.

Njawwww....careful old geezer never had a licence, bless him. Was also possibly a **** of a 20year old tear arsing around with a few hit and runs thrown in for good measure. Deffo frozen sausages in his neighbours dogs bum or garden.

theoretically a ban is possible

Talk about bolting the stable door after the horse has casually wandered off over the horizon..

I just occured to me, if he was born in 1938 and started driving at 12 (1950), he's been roaming about the highways and byways unlicensed/insured for my Dad's entire life so far (born 1950) for context he's 72 now and that's been sufficient time for him to get a driving licence, degree, ~45odd year career and then retire. He's been licensed, insured and paid his VED for 5 decades or so that's going to tot up to the equivalent of tens of thousands of pounds potentially, (part of which will have been underwriting the risk posed by old 'Billy no-****s-given' and the like). But this lazy old twazzle couldn't be arsed to take a driving test that entire time?

Sorry but yanking a "right" he never actually earned at 82 after a lifetime of doing as he pleased, and fining him a few hundred quid is basically a piss take, he's getting off light if that's the extent of it. Backdate the average cost of unpaid premiums to 1950 and add that to the bill at least, and do not issue him another licence, ever...

There’s a reasonable shout that at 82 he’ll have medical conditions that the DVLA would take an interest in too.

Not having a license doesn’t stop you getting points.

That's good to know, hopefully some will get some financial punishment later if they need to get a licence.

yes there are people who just flout the rules

I get the feeling weekly that this group are ever increasing, sadly.
