Or pick up a cheap (earlier edition like 3rd gen) Apple TV and Airplay to it

Mine never really works. Always flickers making whatever I airplay annoying to watch. I've tried everything but resorted to using a cable, It's much better.

A wire always beats wireless. We have both wire and Apple TV FWIW. We find phone/ipad work with Apple TV better than MBP

OP what age MBP do you have ? Some of the older ones have issues with sound out on HDMI, never managed to get my wife's 2012 to work so we use a small external speaker or connect headphone out to tv sound in.

Let's hope the OP doesn't have the new MBP.

the headphone jack is also an optical out if your telly/amp can take it (that's what I use to get sound out of my ancient Mac mini)

Yep my macbook pro is simple, hdmi out. Friend was trying to get his laptop to run zwift the other day, which he didnt succeed at. I rubbed it in his face by both zwifting and watching one of the hunger game movies at the same time on my macbook pro!

Mine is old (2011) hence Thunderbolt. I didn't know newer ones had HDMI.

Yes, new MBP (the ones with the fancy menu bar) only have USB-C ports, so you need a USB-C to HDMI. Old one is mini-DP / Thunderbolt to HDMI.

As much as I love my new MBP I've had to get a couple of USB-C to USB adapters, an USB-C to ethernet adapter, a USB-C to VGA adapter, and I still need to figure out a way of connecting a Display Port monitor!

Apple screwed up on this somehow on some macbooks. If you've got an iPhone or iPad you'll find that the airplay works perfectly on the same system.

Worth checking out AirParrot or Beamer on "try-before-buy" as these seem to work for most folk who have native AirPlay issues with their Macbooks

Do you really love it, tho?

Like really?

*hugs 2015 MBP...the year the MBP reached perfection*

Yep. Same here on both a brand new one and a 2014 MBP. Very annoying. At least Apple TVs and the MBPs were cheap. Oh, wait...
