[#3627726]

stw seems as good a place as any to ask this ๐Ÿ™‚

I have an idea to get a couple of large maps printed to frame and put on the wall in my dining room.

I'm thinking about 2 maps side by side, with one up to date OS explorer (or outdoor leisure, whatever they're called now) and one old covering the same area - both centred on my house.

Slightly inspired by 'Where's the Path?'... maybe the 'old map' could be the 1930s OS map like they have, or something older.

Does anyone know where I could source these maps or prints of them?

I know about OS Select for the new map, but not sure about old maps - short of screen grabbing from the link above (would whoever prints it mind me doing it with no copyright?)

Thoughts / Suggestions ?

Dave

Promap?

Just had a look at their website - they only seem to do 1:2500 and 1:10000 in historic maps... I was thinking more like 1:25000 (they say they can do russian military maps in that scale!!)

Might ping them an email to see if they can help me.

Cheers.

Don't OS do old maps?

I'm sure I've seen custom-centred old OS maps somewhere...

@IHN, I couldn't see anything on their website; maybe I need to contact them direct. It would certainly make it easier, and would mean the 2 maps would go nicely together.

There's a guy on eBay selling loads of vintage OS maps. Don't know if they're old or repros. Copyright on maps is 70 years unless the cartographer is specified by name (in which case it's 70 years from his death) so you might be OK going down that route too.

What you need is one of these, full of lovely old treasures:

Or, if you know a student/academic with access to Edina/digimap they might be able to get you something (they might be breaking the terms and conditions of use, though).

Or speak to a map shop/OS.

edit - not sure why it is wonky, can't be bothered to fix... It is a map chest.

I wanted to do this when I was living in Scotland and the National library there seemed to be the pre-eminent resource: http://maps.nls.uk/index.html

Seems like they have all maps (of scotland) and a lot of scope for ordering etc.

Maybe the British library has a similar service?

@crispedwheel - that looks good, but they annoyingly don't seem to do large prints of the 1:30000 maps!!

A3 prints of what I want, or 80x80cm prints of 1:50000

gits!

This lot do site-centred maps but not sure if they do historic ones.

Regarding CaptJon's post, I "may" have access to Edina if you want to send me an email

IGN (French equivalent to OS) do some absolutely stunning reprints of old 1:10,000 maps of Mont Blanc etc, they are available from the IGN website. Really beautiful maps when mounted and hung on a wall.
