How come the guys in wheel chairs wear helmets but the runners don't? More a musing than a real question.

I assume they go faster? And more chance of hitting their head should trouble arise?

Mind you...already seen at least 1 runner trip over the mat things!

They go significantly faster, which is why they go first too.

how the pro's run so fast whilst looking so comfortable is absolutely amazing though, chapeau.

If that's the answer, at what point does a slow chair take their helmet off or fast runner put one on? Is part of it just the assumption that wheels need helmets?

tell that to the plonker who ran into me in the local woods a few months back despite several shouts of warning

on the upside he did have a continental explorer tread tattoo up his leg as he hobbled off

So, you saw him with enough time to warn him several times, yet you still collided?

Your fault. You should've done whatever was needed to avoid a collision. Sorry, but that's how it is.

You'd be pushed to keep on a bike for that distance. Try running at that pace for a mile. Unless you're a fit regular runner, it will probbly half kill you. ๐Ÿ˜†

I can just about run a mile in under 6 minutes, but only 1 mile! Like to think I'd be able to do a marathon one day...but then I think why, I hate running... ๐Ÿ˜›

I wouldn't, but agreed, running a 6 min mile is fast, going under 5 feels a lot like sprinting.

My 3yr old boy just saw the bloke running on prosthetic blades and said "Daddy, why's that man wearing flip-flops?"

Agreed about the comfort they appear to be in running that fast. I did 2.9k in 12 minutes and it nearly killed me ๐Ÿ™

Is there a set of duller commentators than the athletics lot?

It's the Geordie feller I can't stand. Such a boooooring voice. Not Steve Cram, the other one. Can't remember his name.

Look at that! A tiny little girl has won the women's race! ๐Ÿ˜€

They're incredible, these people. To run that fast, for such a long way is just mental.

Is it just me who is amused by the post race puking? Always makes me chuckle! Incredible running though. And spinning for that matter, the wheelchair racers seem to love the Sprint finishes.

No made me chuckle to, god that must be a relief to let it all go. Awesome. Just seen a fat manly Kate Middleton and a very short prince run through lol

it seems that drafting is allowed in the wheelchair race.

i watched the 1st/2nd place men in the last couple of km, the lead guy was working his tits off, tucked right in behind him was the eventual winner who looked to be having a nap...

sure enough, in the last 300m, the drater pulled out, and sprinted to the win. seems a little unfair imho.

Ah, the Mini Marathon! I did that a few times when I was a kid; great fun, with all the crowds and sights and that. Some kids take it proper seriously though!

Not really. The front guy didn't have to be in front did he?

Some nutcase is running with a washing machine on his back. Insane. He needs sectioning. ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

I'm assuming he's taken the concrete weights out of it...

There was one or two STWer running this year.

How did you get on ?

Mixed emotions for me, my first one and I thought it was so much fun, an excellent day but a little disappointed with my time...

3:49 for me ... struggled with the heat, there just didnt seem to be any shade or breeze/air. I was on course for 3:30 up until 15/16 but then felt a bit funny and slowed. From then on, it was a case of not completely "blowing up" which a did managed to avoid.

So mixed emotion not bad for my first one, will defo try and go back to get sub 3:30.

Well done Ro5ey! Without being patronising, finishing the thing is an achievement in itself.

...and on the plus side, you have set a time to aim for next year, which you know you can probably beat ๐Ÿ˜€

My mate's GF did it. She had a baby last year and had done little training so was just doing it 'for fun'.

She did just over 3.30 ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

Yes. Political/News Event commentators. You think the Athletics ones are bad? Wait and see who they drag out for the Royal Wedding. Then you'll really know what boring commentating is.

Although Footballism commentary is pretty crappy. Reading from a list of surnames for 90 minutes. Just need to read louder and faster when the small white roundy thing gets near either of the big square netty things.

I had a bit of nightmare round 18/19 miles and dragged myself home in 4hr 51.
Very glad I've done it but will be sticking to bikes for any future events - my knees are properly screwed now!

Well played Meesterbond.

Thats's a marathon ticked off (which is why I wanted to do it, until I found out that I loved running)... what's next? The E'tap de tour?

Actually that's a good question.

What's harder the E'tap or a marathon?

well, he started yesterday, so he'll be roughly 1 mile away from the start.
